Mississippi Braves News Release
Media Giants take on Barbour's Bombers for the fourth time at Trustmark Park. This 2008 battle is Batter Up 4 Stewpot! The August 7th event beginning at 5 p.m. opens the double-header as the M-Braves face Jacksonville in the night cap at 7:05 p.m.
The Bombers lead the series 2-1 dating back to when the game was dubbed Homerun for Habitat and raised funds to build homes for families in low-income metro Jackson neighborhoods. The August affair will help Stewpot serve meals and provide clothing to thousands of needy families in the Jackson area during tough times for the U.S. economy. Fans will receive ticket discounts if they bring at least two cans of food to the game to give a helping hand to Stewpot.
Thursday evening's game is extra special for two Yazoo City native sons, Governor Barbour and Stewpot Executive Director Frank Spencer, who played on the same baseball team at Yazoo City High. The Bombers, which are made up of Governor's Office and former campaign staffers, recently concluded another successful season in their softball league in Ridgeland.
The Media Giants will be led by local media from Jackson area newspapers, including The Clarion-Ledger, radio and TV stations such as CL editorial director David Hampton, CL photo director Chris Todd, CL education reporter Rebecca Helmes, and WAPT-16 anchors Scott Simmons and Brad McMullan plus news director Bruce Barkley. Also on the squad: Mississippi College public relations staffer Andy Kanengiser, a former CL legislative reporter, his son, Nathan K, a 2008 Pearl High alum and Jones County Junior College tennis player, and veteran radio newsman Randy Bell.
Major sponsors for the game include Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi, Cellular South and AT&T. Others include BankPlus, and Jackson law firms such as Schwartz & Associates, and Butler, Snow, O'Mara, Stevens & Canada, PLLC. There will be a raffle at the game, with top prizes including a boat from Bass Pro Shops, a one-year membership to the Courthouse Racquet Club on Lakeland Drive in Flowood, college baseball jerseys from schools like Mississippi College, Hinds Community College, University of Southern Mississippi, and Itawamba Community College, a gift certificate for two to the El Portrillo restaurant, a classic T-shirt from the second annual Johnny Cash festival in Starkville and nice gifts from the Mississippi Braves, the Clarion-Ledger's GetFit and Mississippi Moms Web sites and Big Ten Tires.
Third District Congressional candidate Gregg Harper will toss out the first pitch in his hometown, Pearl. Sen. Terry Burton of Newton will be back for the 4th time to handle announcing duties. Volunteer umpire Joey Azzone and his faithful crew will return to call the game.
Players from both teams are invited to put their differences aside post-game and volunteer for a day to serve meals at Stewpot in downtown Jackson. Let the games begin! A big shout out to the M-Braves, players on both teams, and a lineup of top-notch sponsors to make Batter Up 4 Stewpot a sure hit!
