Winston-Salem Dash News Release
ZEBULON, NC (JULY 18, 2012) - Despite a five-run ninth inning by the Dash, the Carolina Mudcats held on for an 11-9 victory over Winston-Salem Wednesday afternoon inside Five County Stadium.
The Mudcats (15-11, 47-49) led 7-4 before scoring four times in the bottom of the eighth, with Anthony Gallas' three-run double representing the inning's big knock.
However, the Dash (13-13, 57-38-1) did not go away quietly. Winston-Salem sent nine men to the plate in the top of the ninth. Dan Black sizzled a two-run single to center to pull Winston within five, and Juan Silverio split the left-center field gap for a three-run double later in the inning. The Dash sent the tying run to the plate but fell short of what would have been the club's biggest comeback of the year.
The Dash have plated eight runs in the first inning of this series, with three of those tallies coming in Wednesday's opening frame. Black, David Herbek and Silverio recorded two-out RBI singles in the first, during which the Dash sent eight men to the plate.
Carolina did much of its offensive work with the long ball. The Mudcats hit three home runs against Winston-Salem starter Steve McCray (4-2), who struggled after posting his best start of the season six days ago. Bo Greenwell's two-run tater in the first commenced Carolina's scoring. Ronny Rodriguez pummeled a three-run blast in the fourth, and Carlos Moncrief finished up the home run hitting with a solo shot in the sixth.
Despite the loss, Black and Silverio shined. Black went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Through three games this series, the Carmel, Ind., native is 8-for-13 with five runs driven in and five more scored. Silverio became the 11th Winston whacker to pull off a four-plus RBI performance by driving in four during a 4-for-5 showing.
Outfielder Keenyn Walker also made his High-A debut during Wednesday's showdown. The 47th overall pick in last year's draft, Walker went 0-for-2 after pinch-hitting in the top of the eighth.
The Dash are now three and a half games behind first-place Myrtle Beach in the second-half Southern Division race, while Carolina climbs within a game and a half of the Pelicans.
Winston-Salem and Carolina play for the final time at Five County Stadium during the regular season Thursday night at 7:15. Six days after taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning, right-hander Justin Collop (7-2, 3.98 ERA) toes the rubber for the Dash. Carolina has yet to announce its starting pitcher. Pre-game coverage begins at 7:00 on wsdash.com.
The Dash kick off a seven-game homestand at BB&T Ballpark Friday at 7:00 p.m. against the Frederick Keys. For more information or to purchase your tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
