Schlosser Outduels Wang in 6-2 Hillcats Win

Woodbridge, VA - On a night where the attention was clearly more centered on MLB rehabber Chien-Ming Wang starting on the mound for the Potomac Nationals, Hillcats starter Gus Schlosser stole the show with eight scoreless innings in a 6-2 Lynchburg victory. Schlosser gave up a hit the first batter he faced before retiring 24 in a row to complete eight blank frames.
Lynchburg's offense had a great night as well that started in the first inning with back-to-back doubles for Mycal Jones and Nick Ahmed. Ahmed's two-bagger brought Jones home, and Ahmed later scored on an RBI-groundout for Adam Milligan. It was 2-0 Hillcats in the first.
Milligan tripled in his next at-bat to lead off the fourth. Two batters later, Braeden Schlehuber drove in Milligan with a groundout to shortstop, 3-0 'Cats.
Wang left the game after four innings. He threw 66 pitches, but only 36 for strikes. He surrendered three earned runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out one.
Potomac's scheduled starter before it was decided that Wang would be making a rehab appearance was LHP Robbie Ray. Ray entered in the fifth and would go on to throw the final five frames. He held the Hillcats scoreless until the eighth when Milligan hit his ninth home run of the season. It was a solo shot to left field. That made it 4-0 Lynchburg.
Emerson Landoni notched the Hillcats' first single of the night with one out in the ninth. Jones followed with another single before Ahmed doubled both runners home to increase the lead to 6-0.
Despite having thrown just 87 pitches, Schlosser would not return for the ninth inning. LHP Blaine Sims entered from the bullpen. He went on to give up two runs, one earned, on three hits but finished the game for a 6-2 Hillcat win.
Schlosser (10-4) earned the win. He is now tied with teammate RHP Cody Martin for the league lead in wins. Wang (0-1) was handed the loss. He has now given up four earned runs in eight innings (two starts) for Potomac this season.
The Hillcats are 14-12 in the second half and remain in first place in the Northern Division.
The series finale between the 'Cats and Nats is scheduled for 12:00pm tomorrow afternoon. The Hillcats will attempt to split the series with RHP Cody Martin (10-6, 2.80) taking the mound against LHP Matt Grace (4-9, 5.91) on the hill for the Nationals.
