The Series vs Frederick -- The Mudcats venture to Maryland for the final time in 2014 to face the Frederick Keys. The club has performed well at The Grove this summer, winning four of five. The Mudcats swept a three-game set from the Keys in April. The hold a slim 25-24 lead in Little America, but Carolina has won 10 of the last 15 here. The Keys lead the all-time series 28-24.
Last Time Out -- The Potomac Nationals took a doubleheader from the Mudcats on Sunday, August 3. Hector Sil- vestre took a no-hitter deep into the seventh before Carolina's rally fell short in a 5-2 loss in game one. Yandy Diaz broke up the no-hit bid working the count full with two out and muscling a triple off the high wall in right. Potomac rolled up nine runs and 10 hits to claim the second game 9-4. D.J. Brown shouldered the loss after yielding seven runs and seven hits in just 1.2 innings. Jeremy Lucas homered in both ends of the twin bill. Tonight's Pitching Probables -- Cole Sulser hopes to build off a solid performance in his last outing at Salem. The right-hander used a big lead to work through 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits for his eighth qual- ity start. The former Dartmouth Big Green star has allowed no fewer than three runs in his last nine starts. The Mudcats will face a Major League rehabber tonight as Dylan Bundy throws for the Keys. Bundy, returning from Tommy John surgery he underwent in 2013, is 1-2 with a 5.73 ERA in five starts.However, he has only allowed two runs over his last 10.1 innings.
Traversing Rough Waters -- After dropping Sunday's twin bill to Potomac, the Mudcats find themselves under .500 in the second half for the first time since June 27. The team has slipped out of the final playoff spot in the Southern Division while the Winston-Salem Dash have moved into first place. The Mudcats trail the Dash by 2.5 games. The club will face the Dash and Myrtle Beach Pelicans a combined 13 times over their final 23 games. Carolina hopes to a overcome a difficult 4-12 stretch by finishing the month of August strong.
The Basher of the Wabash Valley -- Jeremy Lucas hails from West Terre Haute, Indiana, a city whose motto is "A Level Above." Lucas has represented his hometown's motto this summer, setting new career totals for a season with 24 doubles, 11 home runs and 56 RBI. The former Indiana State Sycamore standout has also reached new high marks with 59 runs scored, 97 hits and 52 walks. Coincidentally, all six of those categories lead the Mudcats for 2014. Through 96 games, his .273 batting average is right on par with his best year, 2013 at Lake County, in which he hit .274 through 75 games. Lucas homered in both ends of Sunday's doubleheader against the Potomac Nationals.
Hoosier Hit King -- Jerrud Sabourin set the all-time hits record while playing for the Indiana University Hoosiers during his collegiate career, finishing with 332. Through 193 games (2013-2014) with Carolina, Sabourin has col- lected 192 base knocks. In 72 games this year with the Mudcats, Sabourin has set a new season-best with four home runs. Showing a model of consistency, the Californian owns a .322 average (49x152) over his last 42 games.
Season of Close Calls -- The Mudcats have played more games to the wire than any team in the CL this year, with 60 of their 110 completed games decided by two runs or less. For the season, Carolina is 26-34 in games decided by two runs or less.
Muddy's Tales -- The Mudcats host the Myrtle Beach Pelicans for three games from August 8-10. The series kicks off with Fireworks Friday and a 7 p.m. first pitch on August 8. Saturday's 6 p.m. tilt features a Pub Glass giveaway and fireworks by Sandoz. Sunday's 2 p.m. finale includes "Kids Run the Bases" presented by Amerigas follow- ing the game.
