August 5, 2014 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release
The Salem Red Sox open a three game series with the Lynchburg Hillcats tonight at 7:05 at LewisGale Field.
Super Mario: The Sox fell 7-6 Sunday night in Myrtle Beach despite the best efforts of Mario Martinez. Mario belted two two-run home runs, including the go ahead moon-shot in the top of the ninth to give the Sox a 6-5 lead at the time. Martinez's third inning blast was his first home run since June 25th, a stretch of 123 at-bats without a home run. Martinez will look to continue his power surge against Lynchburg, a team Mario is hitting .322 against this season (19/59). Martinez has six doubles, two home runs and 14 RBIs in 15 games against the Hillcats this season.
Matty J: Sox OF Matty Johnson extend his hit streak with a 1-for-4 night Sunday. Matty has now hit in seven straight games, with a .464 average (13/28) over that span. Johnson has driven in seven runs, and scored eight in the last seven contests. This came on the heels of an excellent month of July, in which Johnson finished with a .323 average (30/93), and a .447 on base percentage. Johnson scored 26 runs, walked 19 times, and drove in 16 runs in July. He now leads the Sox with 31 multi-hit games.
In A Groove: Carlos Asuaje started his Carolina League career just 1- 13, but he has been on a tear ever since. Asuaje is 15 for his last 40 (.375), bring his season average with the Sox to .302. Combined with his Greenville numbers, Asuaje is hitting .304 on the season (115/378). Carlos already has six multi-hit games in his first 13 with Salem. He brings a four game hit streak into tonight's contest.
July Check: The Salem Red Sox posted both their highest team bat- ting average and lowest staff ERA of any month this season during July. However the Sox finished the month 11-16, their worst record of any month. The ERA and average were both second best in the Caro- lina league in the month, but the Sox finished a game behind Lynch- burg for the league's worst record in July. Despite finishing the month five games under .500, Salem outscored its opponents 115- 111 in July.
Notable Nuggets: Nine of Salem's last 17 losses have been by two runs or less.
The Salem Sox are just 7-21 against Potomac and Frederick this sea- son, while they are 45-37 against the rest of the Carolina League. In the second half of the season, Salem is 2-13 against the Keys and P- Nats, and 17-10 against everyone else.
The Salem Sox already have half as many home runs through three games in August (4) than they did in all of July (8). The Sox 4th home run in July didn't come until the team's 11th game of the month on July 12th at Wilmington.
Dating back to 2012, Salem has now won 28 of its last 38 games played in the month of August.
