Frederick, Md. - The Frederick Keys scored four runs in the third and claimed a rain-shortened 7-3 victory over the Carolina Mudcats in eight innings on Tuesday night at Harry Grove Stadium. The Mudcats (21-23, 50-61) dropped their fifth straight. The Keys improved to 20-23 in the second half and 52-58 overall.
Dylan Bundy (2-2) scored the win in his sixth Major League rehabilitation start with the Keys. Bundy held Carolina scoreless for 4 1/3 innings despite five hits. He struck out seven. Cole Sulser (4-10) surrendered six runs on 10 hits across 4 1/3 innings. The right-hander walked one and fanned two. Jesse Beal entered the game with a three-run lead and hurled one frame for his fourth save.
The teams played through two scoreless frames before Frederick cracked the seal in the third. Wynston Sawyer and Johnny Ruettiger sandwiched singles around an out and both scored on a double to left by Adrian Marin. Trey Mancini drew a walk to keep the pressure on and Chih-Shien Chiang singled home Marin for a 3-0 lead. Jason Esposito capped the inning with a sac-fly to center that scored Mancini.
The Keys added two more in he fifth inning on singles by Esposito and Sawyer.
Carolina rallied with three runs over the sixth and seventh to get within striking distance. Matt Hobgood plunked Joe Sever on the left arm with two away in the sixth and Todd Hankins beat out an infield hit to reach. Alex Monsalve smashed a double down the left field line to push both across.
Logan Vick launched his second double of the night to left-center on the outset of the seventh stanza. The Mudcats manufactured the run with a pair of groundouts by Yhoxian Medina and Yandy Diaz.
The teams went into the first rain delay in the top of the eighth. The crews worked to resume the game after a 47-minute delay. Jerome Pena launched a solo shot off Luis DeJesus, but the right-hander was able to pitch out of the jam. The heavy rains returned just as the ninth began and the game was called due to unplayable conditions. Delay time totaled one hour and 10 minutes overall.
The Mudcats continue their series with the Frederick Keys on Wednesday, August 4. First pitch at Harry Grove Stadium is set for 7 p.m. Carolina hosts Myrtle Beach for a weekend series August 8-10.
