Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem, VA (August 5, 2014) - The Lynchburg Hillcats strung together nine runs between the fifth and sixth inning on the way to a 13-5 victory over the Salem Red Sox at LewisGale Field Tuesday night. Jose Martinez fell a home run short of the cycle for the Hillcats, driving in four runs in the series opening win. Matty Johnson hit an inside the park home run in the bottom of the ninth for Salem to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

Simon Mercedes was saddled with the loss for Salem, surrendering five runs on six hits in five innings of work. Jarrett Miller was credited with the win for Lynchburg.

Salem actually took a two run lead in the second inning on Aneury Tavarez's eleventh home run of the year. Tavarez's knock to straight away center field gave the Sox the lead first in a second straight game, both of which they would drop.

Lynchburg began its comeback to the lead in the fourth. Levi Hyams walked to start the frame, followed by a single by Jose Martinez. Hyams moved up to third on a fly out and scored on a fielder's choice grounder hit by Will Skinner to cut the lead in half.

The Cats picked up their first big inning in the fifth. Three consecutive singles to start the frame by Emerson Landoni, Daniel Carroll and David Nick loaded the bases with no one out. After a strikeout by Mercedes, Jose Martinez tripled in all three runs and giving the Hillcats their first lead. Martinez scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Bloxom to give Lynchburg a 5-2 lead.

Salem chipped away for two of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Jose Vinicio singled with one out and reached second on a wild pitch by Miller. Then Carlos Asuaje singled home Vinicio to cut the lead to 5-3. A batter later, Jantzen Witte doubled home Asuaje to get the Sox within just one run.

But Lynchburg blew the game open in the sixth. Jonathan Aro came in to relieve Mercedes and started the sixth by surrendering a one out double to Tyler Tewell followed by a walk to Emerson Landoni. Daniel Carroll then singled in Tewell to give the Cats a 6-4 edge. After a strikeout, Levi Hyams picked up the second crucial triple by a Hillcat, scoring both runners to give the Hillcats an 8-4 lead. Jose Martinez then ground to short, reaching on an error by Jose Vinicio which allowed Hyams to score. A batter later, Justin Bloxom knocked a ground-rule double to right field, moving Martinez to third. After Kyle Martin came in to relieve Aro, a wild pitch allowed Martinez to score from third to give Lynchburg the 10-4 edge.

The Hillcats added three more in the eighth. Hyams walked against Martin, scoring on a double by Jose Martinez to push the lead to 11-4. After a pop out and wild pitch, Skinner singled in Martinez from third to give Lynchburg an 12-4 lead. With two outs, Aneury Tavarez dropped a popup by Tewell, allowing Skinner to score and cap the Hillcats scoring at 13.

Salem added a run in the ninth on Matty Johnson's inside the park home run to right field to cut the lead to 13-5. It's Johnson's second home run in August.

The Sox and Hillcats return to the field tomorrow at 7:05. Cody Kukuk goes for Salem with Blair Walters on the bump for Lynchburg.
