Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, N.C. - The Frederick Keys made a pair of game-saving grabs and scored two runs in the eleventh to escape with a 3-1 win over the Mudcats on Friday night at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats lost their second straight overtime game and slipped to 8-7. The Keys improved to 7-8 with their fourth straight win.

Elvis Araujo (0-1) struggled with his command in the final frame, allowing two runs on a pair of walks. He finished with three strikeouts. Matt Hobgood (1-1) tossed two scoreless frames in overtime with two strikeouts for the win.

Araujo issued back-to-back walks to Jerome Pena and Brenden Webb on the outset of the eleventh. With Michael Burgess attempting to move the runners up, a wild pitch allowed them to advance into scoring position. Burgess and Wynston Sawyer brought home both with sacrifice flies.

A pitcher's duel between D.J. Brown and Keys starter Branden Kline held both offenses scoreless through four innings. With two out in the fifth, Adrian Marin connected on his first home run of the season off Brown to put Frederick in front. Erik Gonzalez belted his first of the season off Kline in the seventh to tie the score.

The Mudcats had two chances let to win the game, but the Keys' outfield was up to the task. In ninth, with a runner at first and one out, Alex Monsalve blistered a line drive into the left-center gap. What looked like a winner turned into the second out when Webb made the catch on a headlong dive.

Carolina put two in scoring position with two out in the tenth, but Logan Vick's fly ball to left was caught just shy of the wall by Burgess for the final out of the inning.

The Mudcats continue their series against the Friday Keys on Saturday evening. The Mudcats will celebrate Christmas in April at Five County Stadium with a special appearance by Santa Claus. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Left-hander Shawn Morimando starts against the Keys' Parker Bridwell.
