ZEBULON, NC - Playing their third extra-inning game of the season, the Frederick Keys benefited from a bout of wildness by Elvis Araujo and a pair of sacrifice flies from Michael Burgess and Wynston Sawyer to earn a 3-1 win over the Carolina Mudcats in 11 innings on Friday night at Five County Stadium. It was the Keys first extra-inning triumph of the season, and extended the team's winning streak to a season-high four games. Additionally, Frederick has won its last five road games.

Friday night started out as a pitcher's duel. Making his fourth Carolina League start, Branden Kline faced only one over the minimum through the first five innings. However, Carolina's D.J. Brown was equally as effective. Making only his second Advanced-A start, the righty allowed only one hit through his first four innings, and retired 12 in a row at one point.

The streak was snapped by Adrian Marin in the fifth. Hitting with a 3-1 count, the Keys shortstop crushed Brown's thigh-high offering over the leftfield fence to give Frederick a 1-0 lead.

After getting through the sixth without incident, Kline trotted out for the seventh. In unchartered territory (his previous high for innings pitched in a game was six), the righty misfired to leadoff man Erik Gonzalez, who hit a solo homer to make it 1-1. In the process, Gonzalez also extended his hitting streak to 11-games.

Kline limited the damage to just a run before exiting after seven innings. The longest outing of his career, the 22-year-old allowed one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out four. It was also his second quality start of the season (both have come against Carolina).

In the ninth, both sides had chances to win, but neither could push through. With men at first and second, Marin grounded into a double play, while Brenden Webb made a diving catch in center, robbing Alex Monsalve of a game-winning extra-base hit. Lex Rutledge then struck out Anthony Gallas to send the game to extra-innings.

Araujo (0-1) struck out the side in the 10th, but struggled to command his pitches in the 11th. With rain falling, the southpaw walked Jerome Pena and Webb, before a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Needing only a sacrifice fly, the Keys got two, first from Burgess, and then from Sawyer to make it 3-1.

Back out to wrap things up, Matt Hobgood (1-1) shutdown the Muddies in the 11th to close out the win. In two innings, the Californian walked two and did not allow a hit. Frederick plays the second of four games against Carolina on Saturday night. Right-hander Parker Bridwell (0-1, 1.64) takes the mound for the Keys and will be countered by Mudcats lefty Shawn Morimando (1-0, 2.81). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., and fans can listen to the broadcast on 1450 AM The Source and on frederickkeys.com. The Keys returns home on April 23, when the Myrtle Beach Pelicans visit Harry Grove Stadium. For ticket information, please call 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
