Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM DASH (4-10) vs. SALEM RED SOX (7-7)
RHP Braulio Ortiz (0-1, 0.96 ERA) vs. LHP Brian Johnson (1-1, 7.24 ERA)
7 p.m. - BB&T Ballpark (Winston-Salem, N.C.)
KEYS SEND DASH TO RARE HOME SWEEP The Dash dropped their fourth consecutive game thanks to Frederick's 7-3, sweep-clinching victory on Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem claimed a short-lived 3-2 lead in the fifth inning, but the Keys responded with three runs in the sixth against losing pitcher Tony Bucciferro. Frederick put the game out of reach with two more in the seventh against Euclides Leyer, who had not surrendered a run in his previous 9.1 innings of work.
LIKE A FOUR-LEAF CLOVER Since moving into BB&T Ballpark prior to the 2010 season, Winston-Salem boasts a home record of 173-115 (.601), which is fourth-best in all of full-season Minor League Baseball during that span. The Dash had only been swept one other time in BB&T Ballpark history prior to Thursday's brooming by Frederick. The first instance did not take place until August 14-16 of last season against Salem. Winston played its first 81 series at BB&T Ballpark without a sweep.
FOR COMPARISON The Dash have only been swept twice in 86 all-time series at BB&T Ballpark, and the club has only faced that possibility 10 times. Winston-Salem evaded a brooming in each of the first eight opportunities with victories by a combined score of 58-31. On the flip side, Winston-Salem has logged 18 series sweeps in the BB&T Ballpark era. Since 2010, the Dash own a better home record than every minor league team except Savannah, Durham and Hagerstown.
AT THE TOP The Dash have given up 26 unearned runs, which paces all 120 teams in Minor League Baseball. The Dash own a three-run lead on the Tampa Yankees (High-A, Yankees) for the top spot in that category. Winston has committed a Carolina League-leading 28 errors. The Dash have made at least one defensive miscue in all but two of their games, and 40 percent of the runs the club has given up have been unearned.
TRYING TO SOLVE SALEM Since becoming the Dash in 2009, Winston-Salem boasts the best record in the Carolina League (385-323-1, .544). Of the eight teams they have played in the CL (including now-defunct Kinston), the only opponent with a winning record against the Dash is Salem. Winston-Salem is 46-56-1 against the Red Sox, and the Dash have not won a series against their division rival since a rain-shortened two-game set from May 21-23, 2013 in Virginia.
TRIPLE TIM Dash shortstop Tim Anderson collected his third triple of the season in Thursday's loss. Anderson is tied with Myrtle Beach's Chris Garia for the Carolina League lead in triples, while Anderson also shares the circuit's lead in doubles (6) and extra-base hits (9). The White Sox first-round pick in 2013, Anderson is one of 10 minor leaguers with three or more triples, and his nine extra-base hits are tied for 11th in MiLB.
POWER OUTAGE Through 14 games, the Dash have gone yard just three times, which is a total that is tied with Wilmington for last place in the Carolina League. Outfielder Courtney Hawkins owns all three of those home runs. The Dash have not gone yard since Hawkins' three-run blast in the eighth inning on April 8 at Salem, which amounts to a homerless drought of 78 frames.
DASH DOTS Dash infielder Keon Barnum went 4-for-10 with three RBIs and a run scored in the Frederick series...In his Dash debut, southpaw Sean Bierman recorded two hitless innings out of the bullpen...Dash alumnus Chris Sale took a no-hitter into the sixth inning Thursday night against Boston...Even though he has not driven home a run since Monday, Courtney Hawkins still paces the CL in RBIs (15), a total that is tied for ninth in all of Minor League Baseball...If he qualified, starter Braulio Ortiz would be fifth in the CL in earned run average (0.96).
