Chattanooga, TN ---- Corey Smith capped a five-run Chattanooga ninth inning with a game-ending grand slam to catapult the Lookouts past the Carolina Mudcats 6-4 at AT&T Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Lookouts trailed 4-1 entering the ninth inning, but had seemingly endless chances against the Mudcats bullpen over the game's final four innings. Batting with one out and the bases loaded, Smith turned on a 1-0 pitch from closer Jordan Smith (L, 1-3) to lift the Lookouts to their second straight victory. Philippe Valiquette started the eighth, working out of a first and second, none out jamelivere, but in the ninth, Valiquette surrendered three straight hits to begin the inning, which netted the Lookouts a run, but Elian Herrera was gunned down at third base by centerfielder Dave Sappelt to stem the Lookouts' rally for a moment. After a walk, Valiquette was lifted for Smith, whose 3-2 pitch to Trayvon Robinson barely missed the inside corner to load the bases ahead of Corey Smith.

Trailing 2-0 in the sixth, the Lookouts went to quiet work against reliever Ruben Medina. Medina walked the bases loaded before Mike Rivera grounded into a double play to score a run. In the seventh, Chattanooga had the first two hitters reach against Medina and Joe Krebs, but failed to score, as they did in the eighth against Valiquette.

Meanwhile, the loss negated a solid start from Tom Cochran, who pitched five scoreless innings.

Jose Castro delivered a pair of run-scoring singles to put the Mudcats up 2-0 against starter Chris Withrow. After the Lookouts cut the lead to 2-1 in the sixth, Dennis Phipps singled home a run in the seventh to boost the lead to 3-1. In the ninth, Carolina appeared to have put the game away on an opposite-field double by Mike Costanzo, scoring Eric Eymann. However, later in the inning, Costanzo was cut down at home plate by right fielder Scott Van Slyke to keep the Mudcats lead at three runs.

Carolina left the bases loaded three times in the Sunday defeat, which evened the series with Monday night's finale scheduled for 7:15 PM ET. Dallas Buck (3-4) starts opposite Mario Alvarez (3-3).
