Mudcats extra inning winners in finale

Jacksonville, Fla. - A valiant comeback effort came up just short for the Jacksonville Suns Thursday night at the Carolina Mudcats held off the Jacksonville Suns in extra innings by the score of 4-3 to take the final game of the series at the Baseball Grounds.

Carolina third baseman Lee Mitchell belted an 11th inning, solo homerun to break a 3-3 tie and give Carolina a 4-3 lead and ultimately the win.

Jacksonville trailed 3-1 at one point, but chipped away with a run in the seventh inngin on a pinch-hit RBI single from Wilkin Ruan to make it a 3-2 game. Jacksonville nearly scored the game tying run in the seventh on a Chin-Lung Hu groundball to the right side that was misplayed by the Carolina first baseman. The ball bounced to the second baseman who threw to the pitcher covering the bag and the umpire ruled Hu out to end the inning. Jacksonville left a runner stranded at third base. Suns Manager John Shoemaker argued the call with the first base umpire and was ejected from the game.

The Suns ended up tying the game at three in the eighth inning. Andy LaRoche moved from first with two strikes on A.J. Zapp. The Suns first baseman swung and missed and the throw to second went into centerfield, allowing LaRoche to reach third. When centerfielder Alejandro DeAza misplayed the ball, LaRoche rounded third and scored to tie the game at three.

Jacksonville opened the scoring in the fourth inning as Matt Kemp belted his sixth homerun of the season, an opposite field shot to make it 1-0.

Carolina scored two runs on three hits and two Suns errors in the fifth and Mudcats shortstop Jamie Athas homered in the sixth to make it a 3-1 Mudcats advantage.

Taylor Tankersley improved to 2-1 in the relief win for Carolina while T.J. Nall fell to 0-2 in the loss for the Suns. Chris Mobley saved his third game of 2006.
