Knoxville Smokies News Release

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn.- The Tennessee Smokies will hold a special Mother's Day promotion on Sunday, May 14 in conjunction with the Knoxville affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation to help raise money and awareness for breast cancer.

The Smokies will be wearing commemorative jerseys featuring pink lettering and the pink ribbon used by the Susan G. Komen Foundation as a symbol of breast cancer awareness for their 2:00 p.m. game against the Huntsville Stars. At the conclusion of the game the Smokies will auction and raffle off the jerseys with all proceeds being donated towards the Knoxville affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation to help in their fight to find a cure for breast cancer.

"This was a great chance for the Smokies to team up with local organizations and help take on a terrible disease," Director of Community Relations Lauren Chesney said of it's partnership with the Susan G. Komen Foundation. "Being able to hold this event on Mother's Day is a great opportunity to bring more attention to this great cause and to not only honor survivors but also remember those who have lost their fight against cancer."

An estimated 212,920 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the United States during 2006. An estimated 40,970 women will die from breast cancer. For more than 20 years, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has been a global leader in the fight against breast cancer through its support of innovative research and community-based outreach programs. Working through a network of U.S. and international Affiliates and events like the Komen Race for the Cure®, the Komen Foundation is fighting to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by funding research grants and supporting education, screening and treatment projects in communities around the world.

The Smokies begin their series against Hunstville on Friday, May 12 at 7:15 p.m. at Smokies Park.
