Carolina Mudcats News Release

Pearl, MS --- Gaby Sanchez homered twice and drove in a season-high five runs to lead the Carolina Mudcats to a 9-5 win at Southern Division-leading Mississippi on Wednesday night at Trustmark Park.

Sanchez homered in the second against rehabbing left-hander Mike Hampton, then delivered a three-run shot in the fifth. Sanchez pushed across another run by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the third.

Carolina, which moved back to .500, remained four games behind first-place Tennessee, which won on Wednesday night.

The Mudcats (13-13) trailed 5-3 entering the fourth inning, but scored six times against Carlos Sencion (L, 3-2). The first two Mudcats reached before a sacrifice from Gaby Hernandez (W, 1-0). Dante Brinkley tied the game with a two-run double into the right field corner, then came home on a double by Manuel Mayorson. All-star game MVP Chris Coghlan walked ahead of Sanchez's second home run, pulled over the left field wall to boost the lead to 9-5.

Hernandez, who was making just his second Carolina start, permitted two runs in the first and second, and another in the third before shutting down the Braves over his final three innings.

Matt Yourkin and Todd Doolittle combined for three scoreless innings to close out the victory.

Rick Vanden Hurk starts the series' second game on Thursday night against Thomas Hanson at 8:05 PM ET.
