Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY- On an night highlighted by Major Leaguers, it was a gritty performance by the Montgomery Biscuits (12-13) offense that made the difference.
The Biscuits came back not once, but twice against a Birmingham Barons (15-11) pitching staff that ranks tops in the Southern League in ERA.
Before any every-day Baron took the mound, White Sox closer Bobby Jenks tossed a perfect first inning. Jenks, rehabbing with the Barons, struck out the side in order before exiting after 1/2 inning.
After the Barons took an early 2-0 lead in the top of first inning on a Ricardo Nanita two-run homer, the Biscuits answered right back scoring two runs on four hits in the second on Kyle McCulloch, the scheduled starter who relieved Jenks.
JT Hall added a two-run bomb of his own in the fourth to put the Biscuits up 4-3. Major League rehabber Rocco Baldelli got off to a decent start with the Biscuits, going 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikout in hist first AA game in 2008.
Montgomery won the battle of the bullpens after starter Jino Gonzalez kept the Biscuits in the game, allowing three earned runs in five innings on two home runs.
Trailing 5-3 in the eighth, the Barons got to Ryan Reid for two runs on two walks, a single, a wild pitch and Nanita RBI ground out to tie the ballgame at five.
The Biscuits retaliated once more, scoring in the bottom half of the inning to take the final lead of the night. Barons relievers Joe Torres and John Lujan combined to give up a two run ninth, making the score 7-5. Erold Andrus drew a walk before a Hall sacrifice bunt moved him to second. With a man in scoring position and two outs, pinch hitter Rhyne Hughes belted the game winning RBI single, followed by a Rashad Eldridge RBI double.
Game two is tomorrow night and will feature more big league talent on the mound for both clubs. Former Cy Young runner up, Esteban Loaiza will face off against Rays top prospect David Price. Price has already defeated former Cy Young winner Pedro Martinez earlier this season. The battle gets underway in Alabama's Capital at 7:05 Central Thursday night.
