Mudcats Drop Finale 6-3 in Error Filled Day

ZEBULON, N.C. - Jesus Parra had two doubles and drove in two runs, Jadher Areinamo had a game-tying single in the fourth and turned a highlight reel double play in the seventh, but the Carolina Mudcats stranded seven base runners and committed a season-high four errors in a 6-3 loss to the Fredericksburg Nationals in Sunday's series finale at Five County Stadium.
With the loss, the Mudcats (18-13) ended up with a series split with both teams winning three games in the six-game series. The Fredericksburg (11-20) victory snapped Carolina's three-game winning streak and was their first win since the second game of the series last Wednesday night.
Jose Colemenares drove in the first run of the game with a two-out RBI single in the first off Carolina's starter Tyler Wehrle. Parra then doubled in two runs with two-outs in the second as Carolina took a 2-1 lead.
The two-out runs kept coming as Elijah Greene doubled in a run to tie the game with two outs in the third. Areinamo then delivered a game-tying two-out RBI single in the fourth to lock the game at 3-3.
Fredericksburg then took the lead for good with a two-out RBI single from Murphy Stehly in the sixth. The final runs of the game came in the eighth when reliever Jeison Pena made an errant throw to first that brought in Sammy Infante and Green with two outs in the inning. Pena had nearly worked his way fully out of a bases loaded jam before committing his error.
Pena's error was the fourth of Carolina's season-worst four errors in the game. Catcher Matt Wood had two of those with one being an overthrow to second on a double steal and the other on catcher's interference. Areinamo was also charged with an error, but additionally turned a spectacular double play that saw him start the turn with a behind the back toss second in the seventh.
Wehrle went four full innings in his start with three runs and three hits. He also walked two and struck out four in his first start of the season. Miguel Guerrero (L, 0-1) followed in relief and allowed a run on two hits over three innings while taking the loss. Pena then finished the game with two innings where he allowed two unearned runs and struck out two.
Bryan Caceres started for the FredNats and allowed all three Carolina runs while pitching into the fourth. Reliever Franklin Marquez earned the win while holding the Mudcats scoreless over an inning and 1/3. Marquez (W, 1-0) allowed one of two inherited runners to score, but struck out two and walked one in the victory.
Relievers Kevin Rodriguez and Pedro Gonzalez both earned holds with Rodriguez keeping all three of his inherited runners (from Mason Denaburg) from scoring in the sixth and Gonzalez going two scoreless innings. Christian Ciuffetelli then worked around a Parra double in the ninth while keeping Carolina scoreless to earn the save.
