Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC --- Pat Magness keyed a four-run eighth inning with a three-run double as the Carolina Mudcats defeated the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx 6-3 to even a four-game series on Tuesday night at Five County Stadium.
Magness (1-4, R, 2B, 3RBI), whose two stints on the disabled list this season cost him over two months of the season, smoked a pitch from Emmanuel Ramires over Jackson Melian's head in right-center field to aid the Mudcats in overcoming a 3-2 deficit. The double was Magness' first hit since April 11th. Ryan Jorgensen (1-4, RBI) closed the inning with an RBI-single to center for a 6-3 Carolina lead.
Josh Wilson (HR, 3, 1-4, R, 2RBI) connected off of West Tenn starter Jon Leicester for a two-run homer in the sixth to close a 3-0 West Tenn lead to one run.
Randy Messenger (ND, 5IP, 5H, 3ER, 1W, 2K), who was making his first start since June 24th, allowed two runs in the first inning and another in the fourth, but pitched well from the second inning until his outing ended. At one stage, Messenger retired nine of 10 hitters. Messenger, who began the season in the rotation, was making a fill-in start for the Mudcats due to the trade of starting pitcher Ryan Snare to Texas and Todd Moser being placed on the disabled list.
Billy Hall (3-4, 2R, 3B, SB) had three of Carolina's eight hits, including a triple into the right field corner to initiate the four-run inning.
Ryan Baker (ND, 2IP, 1H, 0R, 1W, 2K) pitched two scoreless innings for Carolina, while Mike Flannery (S, 12) registered his 12th save with a spotless ninth inning.
Leicester, making his third start of the season, was working on a two-hit shutout through five innings.
Trevor Hutchinson (2-0, 1.53) starts the third game of the series Wednesday night against West Tenn's Jae-Kuk Ryu (1-0, 5.06) at 7:15 PM ET.
