Frederick Keys News Release

The Frederick Keys (13-12, 39-52) downed the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (7-17, 40-53) for the third-straight day with a 7-2 victory in front of 4,594 fans at Harry Grove Stadium on Tuesday, July 15. With the victory, the Keys took three of four from the visiting Pelicans.

Second baseman Gary Cates had five RBI to spark the Keys offense on Tuesday. He hit his first home run of the season, a three-run shot in the 2nd inning that turned a 3-2 Keys deficit into a 5-3 Keys lead. Earlier in the 2nd inning, centerfielder Adam Manley hit a RBI single and shortstop Brandon Fahey followed with a RBI single of his own.

Cates added two more RBI in the 7th inning on a two-run single to give the team a 7-4 lead. He finished the afternoon 2-for-4.

The Pelicans started the scoring on the afternoon with two home runs in the 2nd inning off of Keys starter Dave Farren. Right fielder Charles Thomas hit a solo shot to start things off for the Pelicans and second baseman Aaron Herr followed two batters later with a two-run blast that just barely cleared the outfield wall. Trailing 5-3 in the 7th inning, the Pelicans added another run on a RBI force out by first baseman Scott Thorman to cut the Keys lead to one run.

Keys reliever Enrique Ramirez (1-0) pitched 2.0 innings in relief, allowing only one hit while striking out three batters to get his first victory of the season. Shaun Babula got his first save of the season after pitching the final 2.2 innings and not allowing a run. Pelicans starter Dan Meyer (2-2) got the loss for Myrtle Beach.

The Keys are off on Wednesday before taking to the road for a seven-game road trip starting in Kinston, NC. The three-game set with the Kinston Indians will start on Thursday, July 17 at 7:00 p.m. Starting the first game for the Keys will be RHP Dave Crouthers (6-4, 3.21) while the Indians will start RHP Brian Slocum (4-4, 3.98).
