Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, NC - The Carolina Mudcats (8-1) continued their winning ways Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium with a 6-4 win over the Down East Wood Ducks (4-5). The Mudcats have won five straight games and maintain their first place position in the Carolina League North Division.
Carolina struck first in the bottom of the second thanks to some heads up baserunning from Yhoswar Garcia. While at third on a ground out from Miguel Briceno, Garcia bolted to the plate and scored the game's opening run. The following inning, Yophery Rodriguez picked up a one-out single before Luis Castillo launched a two-run home run off Down East starter Luis Valdez (L, 0-1) to right to give the Mudcats a 3-0 edge. It was Castillo's first long ball of the year. Kay-Lan Nicasia followed with a wall ball double and Blayberg Diaz chased him home with a two-bagger of his own, making it 4-0.
Nicasia wasn't done offensively after the double. In the fifth, he led off with another one to right field and two batters later, Garcia brought him home on a groundout to third to bring the lead to five. Carolina added their sixth run in the sixth on an RBI single from Yophery Rodriguez, who finished with three hits.
On the mound, Yorman Galindez went two and two-thirds scoreless to start the game and handed the ball off to lefty Osbriel Mogollon (W, 1-0) to get the final out of the third. Mogollon did that and then some, pitching three and a third scoreless frames in relief. He has not allowed a run over seven and a third innings to start 2024.
The Wood Ducks made things a bit interesting in the late innings thanks to two-run home runs from Gleider Figuereo in the eighth and Marcus Smith in the ninth, but Blake Whiting ultimately got the final outs in the ninth to extend the winning streak.
The Mudcats will look for their six straight win on Tuesday as they open a six-game road series with the Augusta GreenJackets at SRP Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
