CarL Lynchburg Hillcats

Hillcats Top Nationals, 7-5

April 14, 2024 - Carolina League (CarL)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

After dropping the first two games of the series to the FredNats, the Hillcats even up their first home series of the season at 3-3 in game 6. The 'Cats were powered by two home runs in a 5 run first inning to topple the Nationals by a final score of 7-5.

Angel Genao and Wuilfredo Antunez both would launch home runs in the bottom half of the first inning following a scoreless top half of the opening inning dealt by Hillcat starter Alonzo Richardson. Genao's homer a three-run shot, and Antunez's long ball a 2-run homer to combine for a 5-run 1st.

Apart from the two long balls, the Hillcats offense wouldn't be too much to write home about today. Ralphy Velazquez put together a good day at the plate going 2-3 and drawing 2 walks, reaching base safely 4 times in Sunday's matchup alone.

On the mound for Lynchburg, there wasn't much to complain about. Alonzo Richardson's game 6 start was much better than his game 1 outing. He went 5 innings allowing 2 earned runs, 4 hits, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Jake Berry would head into the game after Richardson and that is when things would get interesting. The FredNats would pop for a 3-run 6th, driving Berry out of the game after just 2/3 innings pitched. Matt Jachec would enter the game, get the 'Cats out of the 6th and take things the rest of the way picking up the save for Lynchburg. Jachec was phenomonal out of the pen only being hit once in his 3 and 1/3 innings and striking out 3. Richardson would be rewarded for his solid start with his first win of the season.

The Hillcats really turned the corner midway through the series after a very disappointing first two games, the Hillcats managed to turn the series around and come away with the spilt, while treating to the 'Cats home crowd to three victories throughout the opening week at the Bank of the James Stadium.

Up next for the Hillcats will be another 6 games series in Salem Virginia as they will be taking on the 5-4 Salem Red Sox who currently are in third place in the North Division of the Carolina league, 3 games out of first place. That series will start on Tuesday, April 16th, and conclude one week from today on Sunday the 21st . After that, the Hillcats will return home to Lynchburg to host the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in their second homestand of the season, game one set for Tuesday, April 23rd.
