Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (1-8) earned their first victory of 2024 on Sunday afternoon, topping the Salem Red Sox (5-4) by a score of 4-1 in the series finale.

Delmarva struck first in the opening inning as Stiven Acevedo delivered an RBI single with two outs to score Aron Estrada, giving the Shorebirds a 1-0 edge after an inning.

Angel Tejada produced another run for Delmarva in the fourth as he forced a bad throw on a steal attempt of third base, allowing him to touch home, making it 2-0.

In the fifth, the Shorebirds added another run thanks to a two-out, RBI single by Aneudis Mordán to score Aron Estrada, pushing the Delmarva lead to 3-0.

In what's been a strong run of starting pitching for the Shorebirds to begin the season, Michael Forret delivered the best outing to date as the Orioles' 14th-round pick from 2023 tossed five shutout innings, allowing no hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Riley Cooper entered for Forret in the sixth and followed the same pattern as his starter as he retired the side to keep Delmarva's lead at 3-0.

The Red Sox would finally break through for their first hit in the seventh on an RBI double by Marvin Alcantara, scoring Antonio Anderson from first base to cut the Delmarva lead to 3-1.

Salem would put more pressure on in the top of the eighth as they loaded the bases with two outs for Johanfran Garcia, but Riley Cooper responded by striking out the Red Sox prospect to end the inning, holding the two-run lead for the Shorebirds.

Delmarva would get a much-needed insurance run in the bottom half of the frame on a solo home run by Stiven Acevedo, his first of the year matched the Shorebird's largest lead of the afternoon, putting them in front 4-1.

Cooper would get the first two outs in the top of the ninth for the Shorebirds, Brayner Sanchez would relieve him with one out remaining, and he would finish the job as he struck out Natanael Yuten to end the game, securing a 4-1 win for Delmarva.

Michael Forret (1-1) earned the victory for the Shorebirds with Salem starter Luis Cohen (0-2) taking the loss.

Stiven Acevedo paced the offense by driving in a pair of runs, including one on his first home run in the eighth inning. Angel Tejada finished the day with two hits, while also stealing two bases. And Aron Estrada scored a pair of runs, stealing two bases as Delmarva swiped six bags total in Sunday's win without being caught, a season-high.

The Shorebirds now head back on the road as they face the Down East Wood Ducks starting on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
