Carolina Mudcats News Release

SALEM, VA - Max Povse, Evan Phillips and Raymar Navarro combined for an 11 inning shutout victory in game one of a doubleheader victory for the Mudcats on Sunday afternoon. The Mudcats took the first game of the twin bill 5-0, but lost game two 5-4 and finished with a doubleheader and series split in Salem at LewisGale Field.

The first game of Sunday's doubleheader was scoreless through ten frames before the Mudcats' (2-2) offense erupted for five runs and three hits in the 11th against Salem (2-2) reliever Taylor Grover (L, 0-1). Reed Harper broke the scoreless tie with a two-run single and Dansby Swanson followed with a two-run double.

Stephen Gaylor, Joseph Daris, Keith Curcio, Harper and Swanson each scored a run in the final extra frame in game one. Curcio was 3-for-4 in the victory, Harper was 2-for-5 with two RBI and Swanson was 1-for-6 with two RBI.

Carolina stranded 13 men on base in game one of the twin bill and finished 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position against Salem's Jalen Beeks and reliever German Tavares and Grover. Beeks started and pitched five and 2/3 scoreless innings before Tavares worked through three and 1/3 scoreless.

Povse started for Carolina and faced just two over the minimum through his six full innings on Sunday. The right-hander out of Cary struck out seven and allowed just one hit over six scoreless frames. Phillips, a Clayton High School alum, followed Povse out of the bullpen in the seventh and worked three scoreless before giving way to Navarro (1-0) for the final two.

In all, the Mudcats' staff combined for 11 scoreless innings, three hits allowed and 10 strikeouts in game one. Navarro earned the victory; his first as a professional in affiliated play.

Ryan Clark started game two for Carolina and went the distance while suffering the loss in his debut. He finished his debut start with five runs and 10 hits allowed over six full innings. Clark (0-1) did not walk a batter and struck out four. He also allowed two home runs, matching his total from his rookie season with Danville in 2015.

The Mudcats led 1-0 after one in game two after a double from Omar Obregon and a RBI single from Swanson in the first. The Red Sox came back with a run in the last of the same inning and later scored twice in the second to take the lead.

Joseph Odom tied things up at 3-3 with a two-run triple to right-center in the fourth, but Jordan Betts put the Red Sox up again with a home run in the same inning. The Red Sox led 4-3 until the sixth when they added one more run late in the game. Carolina scored one last run in the sixth to pull within one, but closer Auston Maddox struck out Joey Meneses with a runner at second to end the game.

Maddox earned the save and Mario Alcantara picked up the victory. Maddox pitched the final inning and held the Mudcats to a run and a hit. Alcantara pitched two and 2/3 innings and kept the Mudcats scoreless and to just one hit. Jake Drehoff started and gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits over three and 1/3 innings.

The Mudcats next play in Wilmington against the Blue Rocks on Monday night. Right-hander Zach Quintana will start for Carolina in game one of the three game seires.
