MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Shawon Dunston Jr. hit a bases-clearing triple and Jose Rosario earned a save in his first game since 2014 as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans defeated the Frederick Keys 7-5 Sunday afternoon at TicketReturn.com Field.
The Keys (2-2) broke the scoring seal in the fourth. Cam Kneeland singled, which was followed by an Aderlin Rodriguez hit by pitch. After a fielder's choice, Austin Wynns crushed a three-run home run to left to put Frederick on top 3-0.
The Pelicans (2-2) loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning before Cael Brockmeyer worked out a walk against Keys starter Chipper Smith (0-1) to give Myrtle Beach their first run. The next batter was Dunston, who ripped a hard grounder down the right field line to clear the bases and give the Birds a 4-3 advantage.
Erick Leal (1-0) followed by working a perfect fifth to ultimately earn the win, giving up three runs over five innings of work.
The Pelicans added on to their lead in the seventh against lefty reliever Tanner Scott. Charcer Burks led off with a walk before Ian Happ smoked a triple to the wall in left-center to make it 5-3 Myrtle Beach. Yasiel Balaguert followed with an RBI single before Jason Vosler dropped a run-scoring double to right, sending the Pelicans to the eighth inning leading 7-3.
Jomar Reyes led off the subsequent inning with a double for Frederick. With two outs, Tad Gold doubled him home and then Anthony Coronia singled in Gold to make it 7-5.
With the same score in the ninth, the Keys loaded the bases with two outs against Pelicans reliever Daury Torrez, prompting a pitching change. Assigned to Myrtle Beach on Saturday, Rosario got Jonah Heim to fly out to right and earn the save in his first game since 2014.
