Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - The forward line of Brett Smith, Justin Aikins and Steven Crampton accounted for five goals as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs cruised against the Missouri Mavericks 6-1 Tuesday night at the CenturyTel Center. Smith and Crampton scored ten seconds apart in the first period to put the ¬ËBugs ahead to stay and extend their win streak to six straight games.
Smith scored two goals and assisted on two others, Aikins scored once and chipped in two assists and both players finished with a team-high +5 rating. Crampton had a goal and an assist and was joined by Jim Jorgensen and Simon Mangos at +4 for the night. Clay Plume and David Rutherford, who now leads the league in goals, notched the other two tallies as Bossier-Shreveport moved back into a tie with Allen for the top spot in the CHL standings.
Missouri actually led early in the first period when Dominic D'Amour scored from the high slot less than three minutes into the game. Smith tied it up for the ¬ËBugs a few minutes later, poking a loose puck through Rob Nolan's legs after Jorgensen's pass deflected off the skate of a Maverick.
Smith and Aikins then helped set up Crampton's goal at 13:49 to put the Mudbugs on top 2-1. Ten seconds after the ensuing faceoff, Aikins skated down the left boards and centered a pass to Smith, who re-directed it by Nolan to chase him from the game and send Bossier-Shreveport into the locker room with a 3-1 lead.
Plume made it 4-1 at 6:31 of the second period, potting his first goal of the season after a made scramble in front of the net. The ¬ËBugs widened the margin in the third stanza as Dave Pszenyczny set up Aikins' back-door tap-in goal at 13:21. Rutherford capped the scoring not even three minutes later with his CHL-most 12th goal of the season from Jeff Kyrzakos and Jeff Martens.
John DeCaro only had to make 17 saves to improve his record to 4-1-0 this year as Bossier-Shreveport outshot Missouri 28-18. Rob Nolan took the loss after surrendering three goals on seven shots in the first 14 minutes of play, while Gerry Festa made 18 saves in relief. Both teams finished 0 for 5 on the powerplay.
The Mudbugs will now head to North Richland Hills, Texas to take on the Brahmas for the second time this season tomorrow night at 7:00 pm. Radio coverage gets underway at 6:45 pm on News Radio 710 AM KEEL, and the game will also be shown live on CHL TV.
