Mudbugs Fall to Rage in a Shootout

Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

BROOMFIELD, CO - Bossier-Shreveport five game winning streak was snapped by the Rocky Mountain Rage on Friday night with a 5-4 loss in a shootout at the Broomfield Events Center .

Down 4-3 in the third period, Chris Brassard's second goal of the night tied it up for the Mudbugs and got them into overtime, but Rocky Mountain scored the only goal in the shootout to improve to 14-2-2 on the season. It was the first shootout of the year for the 'Bugs, who fell to 10-6-3 this year.

With two of the CHL's hottest teams going at it, the game lived up to the hype early on. Four goals were scored in the first 13 minutes of action in the contest. Bossier-Shreveport got into the act early, going up 1-0 just 58 seconds into the contest. Chris Brassard picked up the rebound of a Brett Smith opportunity to give Bossier-Shreveport the early advantage. The Rage would tie the game on a Tyler Butler goal midway through the period. Then the 'Bugs retook the lead as Elias Godoy made a beautiful long pass from the defensive zone to spring Justin Aikins on a breakaway. Aikins beat Rage goalie Scott Reid to put the Mudbugs up 2-1. It was 3-1 before long, after Daniel Pegoraro stickhandled to the front all alone and tucked in his fifth of the year on the powerplay for a two-goal 'Bugs advantage after one.

Rocky Mountain came out with a renewed focus in the second period and it showed. Tied for the CHL scoring lead coming into the game, Scott Wray took over the league lead with his 14th goal of the year early in the period. Then he added to the lead with another goal on a great wrist shot that beat John DeCaro later in the period to tie the contest up for Rocky Mountain . Then a late period powerplay goal by Daymen Rycroft right off a face-off gave the Rage a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes.

Both teams played more conservative in the third period, with both goaltenders making a handful of great saves. Just past the midway point of the period though, Brassard's slapshot off the boards got past Reid to tie the game up for the 'Bugs. Through the rest of regulation and the overtime (including a Mudbugs powerplay in the extra session), neither team could break the tie, and the Mudbugs went to a shootout for the first time this year.

Out of ten combined shooters for both teams in the shootout, just one goal was scored. But the man of the night for Rocky Mountain , Scott Wray would get that goal on the very first attempt of the shootout and Scott Reid shut out Bossier-Shreveport's five shooters as the Rage finished off the 5-4 victory.

The Mudbugs were outshot 37-35 in the contest, but went 2 for 5 on the powerplay, while the Rage finished 1 for 5 on the man advantage.

Up next for the Mudbugs is a short trip just up the road from Broomfield to the Budweiser Events Center, where they'll take on the Colorado Eagles on Saturday night at 8:05 Central time. Colorado will be coming off a 5-3 win over Wichita 5-3 on Friday night. The game can be heard on 1130 AM KWKH with the pre-game show starting at 7:45 CST and will also be shown live on the internet through the CHL Network.
