Mudbugs Fall to Mississippi in Preseason Opener
October 9, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs surrendered three second-period goals to the Mississippi RiverKings on their way to a 4-1 defeat in the 2009 preseason opener Friday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. John DeCaro made 39 saves in defeat and Mark Johnson scored the 'Bugs lone goal in the contest.
With many of their top players sitting out the exhibition contest, the Mudbugs were outshot 43-28 and saw Kevin Jarman lead the way for the RiverKings with two goals. The 'Bugs will now return to Bossier City for another preseason tilt with the 'Kings at 7:05 pm tomorrow night at the CenturyTel Center.
Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard in the first period, thanks in part to John DeCaro's 15 saves as Bossier-Shreveport was outshot 15-8 in the opening stanza. Two fights broke out in the waning moments as Mudbugs rookie defenseman Kirk Medernach took on RiverKings' tough guy Adam Smyth and the 'Bugs Jordan Foote dropped the gloves with Steve Makway shortly after that.
Matt Pierce opened the scoring with an even strength goal for the RiverKings at 3:37 of the second period to give the home team a 1-0 advantage. A few minutes later, Kevin Jarman intercepted a Mudbugs clearing attempt and beat DeCaro to make it 2-0. Mark Johnson cut the deficit in half with a powerplay goal for the 'Bugs midway through the period, but Jarman answered with his second tally of the game to extend Mississippi's lead back to two. The fisticuffs resumed in the period when Bossier-Shreveport's Phil Sbrocchi squared off with Darrell Stoddard. The RiverKings led 3-1 after 40 minutes of play.
The score remained the same for most of the third until Travis Wight's unassisted goal provided the final 4-1 margin for Mississippi. Two more fights ensued before the game's conclusion though, with Tyler Liebel facing Makway and Mike Salekin tangling with Smyth at 18:14.
Ray Jean made 27 saves for Mississippi, who won the preseason opener with Bossier-Shreveport for the second straight year.
Tickets for tomorrow's game are still available at the CenturyTel Center main box office at a cost of $5.00 for current season ticket holders and $8.00 for non-season ticket holders. All tickets are general admission.
The Mudbugs will begin the 2009-2010 season on Friday, Oct. 16 against the Laredo Bucks at the CenturyTel Center. Season ticket packages and mini-plans are available now, so call (318) 752-BUGS or stop by the team office inside CenturyTel Center for more information.
