Mud Hens Win a Wet One
June 4, 2009 - International League (IL1) - Durham Bulls News Release
(Durham, NC) The Durham Bulls offense was unable to capitalize on a solid performance from starting pitcher Carlos Hernandez during a rain-soaked pitchers duel, losing 4-3 to Toledo on Thursday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Hernandez was matched up on the mound against Toledo's Lucas French, with both pitchers keeping the game scoreless through six innings with the first hit of the game not coming until the top of the fifth.
Hernandez was eventually chased off in the seventh after giving up two hits and a run, the first for either team. He finished the day with 6 2/3 innings pitched, allowing one earned run on four hits with three walks and nine strikeouts.
After Toledo's stalemate-breaking score in the top of the seventh, the Bulls answered back with three of their own in their half of the inning. A two-out error by the Mud Hens allowed Ray Olmedo to score from second and prolonged the inning for Durham. One batter later, Jon Weber laced a bases-loaded single driving in two runs and putting the Bulls on top 3-1.
Durham's lead would not last long as Toledo came back with their own three-run rally in the top of the eighth. With one out, bases loaded and Dale Thayer on the mound, Toledo's Brent Delugach grounded out to Olmedo scoring the runner from third and advancing the other two. The next batter, Brent Clevlen, singled to center driving in two more runs to put Toledo up 4-3, the eventual final score.
With the loss, Durham now trails Toledo 2-1 in their four game series. The Bulls can only hope for a push with a win tomorrow in their series and homestand finale with the Mud Hens. Lefty James Houser will take the mound for Durham with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
