TOLEDO, Ohio -- Third baseman Mike Hessman went 1-for-2 with his International League-leading 31st home run and two RBI, while right-hander Ron Chiavacci scattered six hits over six scoreless innings as Toledo held on for a 2-1 win over Indianapolis in front of a sellout crowd of 10,300 Thursday night at Fifth Third Field.

The Mud Hens improve to 76-55 overall and 43-24 at home, while the Indians fall to 66-65 on the season and 31-38 on the road. Friday will be the Tribe's 277th consecutive day with a record of .500 or better.

Indianapolis slips to 6.5 games behind Richmond in the IL's Wild Card race. Meanwhile, Toledo (IL West by 10.0 games), Durham (South by 0.5) and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (North by 6.5) continue to lead their respective divisions.

Hessman gave Toledo the only run it would need in the fifth with his solo blast over the left-field wall.

Chiavacci (6.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 SO) improved to 12-6 with his fourth shutout performance of 2007 and is now tied for first in the IL in wins.

The Mud Hens managed their final run in the seventh after loading the bases with no outs. 2B Henry Mateo led off with a free pass, advanced to third on back-to-back singles and crossed the plate when Hessman was hit by a pitch.

Indians RHP Mark Corey (2.0 IP, 1 SO) entered in the seventh and worked his way out of the jam in his first outing since Aug. 15.

Indianapolis scored its lone run in the ninth when 3B Neil Walker tagged his first Triple-A double to right and raced to the plate on 2B Don Kelly's (2-for-4) infield single.

Tribe LHP Michael Tejera (5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 8-4.

The Indians open their final homestand of 2007 on Friday when the Mud Hens travel to Victory Field for a 7 p.m. contest. RHP Dennis Tankersley is slated to get the nod for Toledo, while RHP Marty McLeary is scheduled to start for Indianapolis.

The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
