Mud Crawlers Survive Late Scare for Win

Toledo Mud Hens News Release
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo Mud Crawlers scored seven runs on 13 hits Friday for their series-opening win over the Pawtucket Red Sox.
In the very first meeting between both clubs this season at Fifth Third Field, the Mud Hens had a six-run lead dissolve to one heading into the ninth inning, but perserved the win for starter Tim Adleman (6-4, 3.48 ERA).
Adleman, a native of Staten Island, New York, worked 6.2 innings and gave up two runs on six hits. Finishing with 10 strikeouts, the 31-year-old has combined for 28 in his previous three starts, all of them being wins.
The Mud Hens have won five of their last six games and improved to 15-13 against IL North Division clubs.
After loading the bases in the second inning, Toledo took a 4-0 lead off two singles and a hit by pitch, with Frank Schwindel picking up two RBIs on a line drive to right field.
Having played in just seven games since his recent transfer from Double-A Erie on August 1, Schwindel has already notched double-digit runs scored (11) and hits (10).
The 27-year-old infielder signed a minor-league contract with Detroit on June 1.
Red Sox starter Kyle Hart (8-5, 3.93 ERA) got pulled following Schwindel's base hit in what was his shortest outing through 23 appearances in 2019.
The second hit allowed by Adleman would also be the first run for Pawtucket in the fourth inning as Rusney Castillo recorded his 15th home run of the season.
Toledo responded in its next at-bat with Ronny Rodriguez's second home run in as many games and a day after his game-winning grand slam at home against the Buffalo Bisons.
Since getting optioned from Detroit at the beginning of July, Rodriguez has totaled 11 home runs through 35 games in Triple-A, tied for second-most among Mud Hens hitters this year.
Rodriguez and Pete Kozma both finished with a game-high three hits Friday.
It became 7-1 in the fifth inning on a dropped tag out at second base and a mishandled pop up to the shortstop for Danny Woodrow and Daz Cameron to score, respectively.
The late scare came once relievers Trent Szkutnik and Austin Adams surrendered two runs each in the eighth inning.
Castillo doubled to make it 7-4 before Bobby Dalec homered to center for his first as a member of the Red Sox.
Adams has finished with an earned run or more in five of his last seven relief appearances dating back to July 23.
Daniel Stumpf would earn the save with his two strikeout performance in the ninth.
What's Next:
Kyle Funkhouser (2-5, 7.98 ERA) is probable to start Saturday in the second of a three-game series against the Red Sox.
Opening pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. (EST).
