Much Needed Win Over Kingston
February 13, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release
Despite the Star Wars themed game in Kingston, it was the Generals who prevailed in Episode V with the Frontenacs. After falling in their last four meetings, Oshawa was hungry for a victory over Kingston, and they did just that with a 6-1 win.
The Generals came out flying tonight and only 58 seconds in, Bradley Latour snuck the puck by Lucas Peressini and made it 1-0 for the top ranked team. They continued to put pucks on net and eventually Michael Dal Colle scored the second goal of the night, assisted by Tobias Lindberg and Mitchel Vande Sompel. Jeremy Helvig replaced Lucas Peressini in net after two goals on six shots in eight minutes. Things were physical in the opening period, including a brief fight between Matt Mistele and Evan McEneny. Oshawa's third goal came after Roland McKeown sat for hooking, and this time Cole Cassels recorded his second point of the night with a power play goal. Kingston had two more power play opportunities in the remainder of the period as well. After 20 minutes, the Generals managed 13 shots on goal, compared to only three for the Frontenacs.
With the power play carried over to the second period, the Frontenacs took full advantage of the extra man as Lawson Crouse scored only 14 seconds in. However, Dal Colle restored Oshawa's three-goal lead with his second of the night, assisted by Michael McCarron, only four minutes into the second. The pressure continued by the Generals as they consistently put pucks on Helvig. The fifth goal came from Lindberg as he sent home a loose puck that Helvig thought he had. McCarron picked up his second assist on Lindberg's goal while Dal Colle tallied his third point of the game. Kingston started to put pressure on Oshawa but it was Appleby who kept the four-goal lead. The physicality was stronger in the second with a line scrum that resulted in a handful of penalties. A late hooking penalty in the second sent Vande Sompel to the box and the Fronts ended the period with a man-advantage. It was a 5-1 game after 40 minutes with Oshawa outshooting their opponents 30-17.
It was an intense third period to say the least. Aidan Wallace added a goal to the scoreboard, assisted by Chris Carlisle, which made it 6-1 for Oshawa. Things began to get interesting about halfway through the period after Smith and Caron dropped the gloves. Just after the Smith fight, Zack Dorval went after Vande Sompel, which set off Cassels and the rest of the line. After a full line brawl on the ice, it took 16 minutes to try and sort the mess. After a handful of penalties and both Cassels and McCarron leaving the ice, the Generals ended up with the power play. With 6:83 remaining in the game, Wallace scored his second goal of the night and gave the Generals a final score of 7-1.
It was quite the division rivalry tonight with a total of 30 penalties. The Generals play again on Monday, Feb.16 at 2:05p.m. against the Sudbury Wolves for our Family Day game. Oshawa will meet with Kingston again on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 7:05p.m., which is sure to be an intense one after tonight's game.
