Mountaineers Fall to Ocean State in Interleague Action

June 22, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release

A big three-run top of the fifth inning boosted the Ocean State Waves over the Vermont Mountaineers, 5-4 on Wednesday in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).

Vermont thrived early offensively, but ended up leaving 12 men on base in the game, which ended up costing them. The Mountaineers tacked on two runs in the first inning, to jump out to an early lead. Right fielder Will Morgan (Middletown, N.J./Old Dominion) doubled, and centerfielder Joe Tietjen (Waxhaw, N.C./UNC Asheville) walked, before both came around to score on a big RBI double off the bat of Troy Scocca (Syosset, N.Y./Fairfield).

Vermont squandered that lead later in the game, though, when the defense allowed five unearned runs to score. The first three came in the fifth inning, when the Mountaineers shortstop committed two consecutive errors, allowing two men to reach base. That set up Alex Holderbach (Fairfield, Ohio/Eastern Kentucky) to knock an RBI single, and Nick Angelini (Bedford, N.H./Bryant) to rip an RBI double, driving in three runs. The Waves never gave the lead back to Vermont.

Ocean State added two more in the seventh inning thanks to an error by the Mountaineers' second baseman.

Vermont got two back in the bottom of the seventh when Scocca drove in two runs with a triple, but that was all they could muster offensively.

Max Ford (Braselton, Ga./Eastern Kentucky) got the win for Ocean State, pitching two innings, and allowing no runs on one hit.

Joe Rocchietti (Green Brook, N.J./Manhattan) pitched well, but suffered the loss for Vermont, going four and two thirds innings, allowing three runes (none of them earned) on four hits. Rocchietti struck out four and walked one.

The Vermont Mountaineers will be in action tomorrow, when they travel to Keene to take on the Swamp Bats. First pitch is set for 6:30 at Alumni Field. The Game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
