Mountaineers Drop Third Straight

Vermont Mountaineers News Release
SANFORD, M.E.--For the second time in three games, the Vermont Mountaineers lost on a walk off, as they dropped their third straight on Monday night, 2-1 in extra innings to the Sanford Mainers.
It was a pitchers duel right from the first pitch, as the two teams combined for just 11 total hits in the contest. Vermont starter Joe Jacques (Shrewsbury, N.J. / Manhattan) pitched five innings, allowing no earned runs. His counterpart, Mainers starter Ben Wessel (Scarborough, ME / Rhode Island), pitched six innings, scattering four hits and allowing one run.
A walk off home run hit in the top of the 10th inning by Sanford right fielder Chris Gaetano (Spring Brook Twp., PA / Monmouth), who came in as a defensive replacement in the eighth, gave the Mainers the win. Gaetano came up with one out in the inning and took the first pitch he saw from Mountaineers reliever Sean Callahan (Colchester, V.T. / UMass Dartmouth) over the right field fence to win it.
Sanford got on the board early, tacking on a run in the first inning when left fielder CJ Krowiak (Endicott, NY / Binghamton) got on via an error. Krowiak took second on a past ball, moved up to third when second baseman Ako Thomas (Chicago, IL/Michigan) also reached on an error, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Zach Jancarski (East Norriton, PA / Maryland).
Vermont's lone run came in the top of the fifth, when Ryan Finemann (Bloomington, I.N. / Indiana) knocked a leadoff single, advanced to third on a double by JT Pittman (Ashland, M.A. / Le Moyne), and scored on an RBI ground out by center fielder Keegan Meyn (Oklahoma City, O.K./Arkansas Little Rock).
Aside from the walk-off in the 10th, Vermont received solid relief pitching, with Callahan and Chandler Sedat (West Bloomfield, M.I. / Indiana) combining to throw four and a third innings, allowing just the one run on one hit.
The same was true for Sanford, as the Mainers relievers Cole Townsend (Abilene, TX / U of Arkansas Little Rock) and Blaise Whitman (Salisbury, MA / Rhode Island) combined for three innings of scoreless ball, allowing just three hits.
Whitman came away with the win for Sanford, while Sean Callahan suffered the loss for the Mountaineers.
Vermont will return home for the first time in almost a week on Wednesday, as they take on the Winnipesaukee Muskrats for the second time already this season. Sophomore Jonathan Stiever (Cedarburg, W.I. / Indiana) will be on the Mountaineers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 at Montpelier Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online via The NECBL Broadcast Network.
