Newport Tops Mystic 8-1
GROTON - The Mystic Schooners lost for a second straight night falling to the Newport Gulls by a score of 8-1.
Willie Rios started on the mound for the Schooners and was never able to get comfortable in a very windy and cold Sunday evening at the Shipyard. Some sloppy baseball early by the Schooners allowed the Gulls to have a big first Inning. An error, two passed balls and a wild pitch allowed for base runners to advance freely. Charlie Carpenter, Mark Powell, and Cole Fabio all singled and drove in a run to make the score 4-0. The Gulls offense was not done for the night yet.
The top of the Gulls order was up again in the top of the second ready to add to the lead. With two outs Gabe Snyder slapped a ball to right field that fell underneath the outstretching glove of CJ Moore and rolled all the way to the way to the fence, allowing Snyder a standup triple. Charlie Carpenter doubled, Shane Matheny walked and Mark Powell singled to tack on two more runs to extend the Gulls lead to 6-0.
The Gulls pitching staff was the highlight of the night combining to allow just one run on two hits. Starting pitcher Brendan Spagnuolo had a great outing going four hitless innings and striking out one. The Schooners were able to threaten in the first and fourth Innings, having runners on second and third, but Spagnuolo was able to bear down and not allow the Schooners to score.
Danny Marsh was brought in for the Schooners for some much-needed relief and was able to get out of bases loaded jam in the fourth inning. Marsh retired both the fifth and sixth innings in order, striking out two.
In the top of the seventh, the Gulls added some insurance runs onto the board. Stephen Scott doubled to left center and Cole Fabio hit an RBI triple scoring Scott. Kyle Dube threw a wild pitch, which allowed for Fabio to score from third and bumped the Gulls lead up to 8-0.
The Schooners were able to get their first hit of the game when CJ Moore hit a double to right field that was inches to the left of the right field line to lead off the bottom of the 7th. Ryan Ramiz, Nick Mascelli, and Taishi Terashima all struck out swinging to strand CJ Moore at second.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Schooners were able to get a man across the plate to score a run. Ryan Ramiz singled and then Nick Mascelli walked with one out in the inning. A Brad Wilpon wild pitch allowed both base runners to advance. An RBI groundout from Taishi Terashima allowed Ramiz to score for the Schooners first and only run of the game.
The Schooners fall to (2-2) with the loss. Their next game is away Monday evening vs. the Plymouth Pilgrims. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM at Forges Field. ?
