NECBL New England Collegiate Baseball League

2016 NECBL Weekly Roundup

June 13, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release

Player of the Week

Outfielder/First Baseman

Noah Vaughan

Sophomore

North Adams SteepleCats

UT-Arlington

Vaughan was on the diamond for all four North Adams games last week and was at or near the top in every major offensive category league-wide. He shared the league lead in runs scored (8) and home runs (2), was alone at the top of the leaderboard with eight hits in 16 at-bats for a league-best .500 batting average, ranked tied for fourth with four RBIs and posted a 1.467 OPS, as well.

A rising sophomore at UT-Arlington, Vaughan saw plenty of action during his rookie college campaign, playing in 52 games (40 starts) while batting .270 (38-141) with 19 runs scored, five doubles, two triples, two homers, 19 RBIs and six stolen bases. He also committed only one error in 145 fielding chances.

Pitcher of the Week

LHP

William Tribucher

Sophomore

Sanford Mainers

Michigan

Tribucher's first start of the summer was a dominant one, as the Michigan southpaw fanned eight - the second-highest punch-out figure from any NECBL hurler last week - over six shutout innings against Danbury on June 11. He allowed just one hit and did not issue a walk over that span, finishing with the week with a 0.170 WHIP - the best mark in the league among starters.

That outing followed a freshman season that saw Tribucher contribute plenty as a rookie in Ann Arbor; the San Clemente, California, native made 23 appearances - 20 of them out of the bullpen - during which he fanned 37 over 39 innings.

Joey Murray (Keene/Kent State) - Led the league with 12 strikeouts on the week over one appearance, fanning a dozen over 6-2/3 innings.

Jackson Tetreault (Winnipesaukee/Fla. Manatee-Sarasota) - Struck out five out of the six batters he faced in an impressive two-inning relief outing that also saw him not allow a base runner.

MLB Draft - Day 1 Update

The San Diego Padres used the 25th pick of the first round of the 2016 Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft to select Kent State University rising senior and left-handed pitcher Eric Lauer on Thursday, highlighting a night that saw six total New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) alumni taken in the first two rounds and first two compensatory rounds of the MLB Draft.

Seven picks after Lauer - who was a member of the 2014 Keene Swamp Bats - the Los Angeles Dodgers used their 32nd overall pick to select former Newport Gull Will Smith, a catcher out of Louisville. But the Dodgers weren't done with NECBL products, using their 36th overall pick in the "Lottery A" compensatory round to select former Laconia Muskrat Jordan Sheffield, a right-hander out of Vanderbilt.

The three of them raise the league's total to 26 first-round draft selections who are NECBL alumni. Those selections also mark the ninth consecutive MLB Draft in which a product from The New England League was selected in the first round.

Former Plymouth Pilgrim Ben Bowden highlighted the first of three second-round selections for NECBL alumni, as the Colorado Rockies took Bowden 45th overall. The Vermont Mountaineers saw an alumnus taken by the New York Yankees late in the second round, as another Louisville product in second baseman Nick Solak, a 2014 Mountaineer, went 62nd overall. Finally, Keene's second drafted alum of the night was selected eight picks later at 70th overall, as Virginia right-hander Connor Jones saw his name next to the St. Louis Cardinals.

The league will have a full press release highlighting all of the league's 2016 MLB Draft selections in the coming days.
