Mountaineers Blasted by Valley
June 22, 2015 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) affair to the Valley Blue Sox, 13-4, at Recreation Field on Monday night.
With the loss, Vermont falls back under the .500 mark, at 6-7. Valley improves to 7-5 on the summer.
After Vermont starter Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y. / Le Moyne) retired the first 16 batters he faced, he retired the side in the sixth inning still having faced the minimum after benefiting from an inning-ending double play. The seventh frame brought a different story, as Powers gave up a leadoff single to Valley leftfielder Garrett McCain (Lavon, Texas / Oklahoma State) and then walked centerfielder Manny De Jesus (Caguas, Ohio / Ohio). Powers was pulled in place of Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif. / Eastern Michigan). After walking the first batter he faced to load the bases, Delaplane surrendered six consecutive hits, allowing seven Valley runs to score in the inning. The Blue Sox concluded the top of the seventh with a 7-1 lead.
Vermont edged back into the game with two runs in the seventh courtesy of a Pat Madigan (Freeport, N.Y. / Northeastern) two-run shot.
In the eighth, senior centerfielder Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) led off with an infield single. After Parenty stole second and reached third on an errant throw by Valley catcher Manny Pazos (Miami, Fla. / La Salle), junior Joe Dudek (Wall Township, N.J. / Kentucky) ripped an RBI single to bring Vermont to within three at 7-4.
The Blue Sox added six more runs in the ninth to cap off the win.
The Mountaineers scored the first run of the game in the second when Derek Chapman (Issaquah, Wash. / Washington State) reached on a fielder's choice by beating out a potential inning-ending double play to allow the first run of the game to come in from third.
Powers was fantastic through six innings despite taking the loss to fall to 0-1. He allowed two runs (both earned) on one hit and one walk. He struck out four.
Valley starter Scott Burke (Upland, Calif. / UCLA) lasted six and one-third and pitched well. He gave up three runs (all earned) on five hits and two walks. He struck out six and earned the win to move to 1-1 on the season.
The Vermont bullpen dealt three innings and allowed 11 runs on ten hits and four walks. The relievers combined to strike out four.
The Mountaineers return to action on Tuesday night when they host the Sanford Mainers for a 6:30 p.m. contest at Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
