NECBL New England Collegiate Baseball League

Alvarez, Edwards Week 3 NECBL Award Winners

June 22, 2015 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - The New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) saw one player homer three times in four games, while another tossed the league's first individual no-hitter in four years, highlighting Week 3 Player and Pitcher of the Week honorees.

Plymouth infielder Mandy Alvarez (Eastern Kentucky) has been named the league's Player of the Week for his damage at the dish last week in only four games, while North Adams right-hander Dakota Edwards (Bridgeport) is the league's Pitcher of the Week for tossing the second no-no in the SteepleCats' franchise history.

Alvarez was lethal in only four games and 16 at-bats last week, making his first week in a Pilgrims uniform a memorable one. He finished 8-for-16 (.500) with four runs, four doubles and a league-leading three home runs while also driving in four runs. His OPS stands at a stunning 1.842 at the end of that span. He homered twice in the Pilgrims' 5-2 victory against Ocean State on Friday and also left the yard the previous day at Mystic as part of a 3-for-3 performance. He was a single and a triple shy of the cycle in that game, as well.

Edwards, meanwhile, became the first individual to toss a no-hitter since Laconia alum Chris Costantino did so in 2011 against Keene in a 1-0 SteepleCat road victory at Sanford on Saturday night in Maine. He fanned six and walked two of the 30 batters he faced, making his North Adams debut a memorable one. The SteepleCats' only other no-no came in 2007 from Nick McNully against Manchester.
