Morse leads Spirit to 5-0 victory

July 30, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release

Bryan Morse flirted with history in 5-0 shutout victory over the Quebec Capitales on Sunday afternoon at Fraser Field, but with just four outs remaining in the game, a single up the middle spoiled his quest for perfection and kept the record books just out of his reach.

As the game progressed a crowd of 3,448 sat rapt in amazement by what was unfolding before their eyes. A two-out, eighth-inning single by Capitales catcher Olivier Lepine broke Morse' no-hitter, however, and brought the fans to their feet in salute of the lefty for his valiant attempt at a perfect game.

Not lost on the Fraser faithful was the dominant performance delivered on the Spirit mound. Morse (8-2) notched a season-high 10 strikeouts and allowed just three hits in the win. Capitales starter Marc Andre Major (3-4) suffered the loss.

Alex Trezza staked the Spirit to the early lead with his 11th home run of the season, tying him with teammate Vic Davilla for the league lead.

The Spirit doubled their advantage with a run in the top of the fourth. B.J. Weed led off with a base hit and moved to second on Andrew Wishy's single up the middle. Both Weed and Wishy moved into scoring position on a double steal and Weed scored the second Spirit run on a single off the bat of Jeff Brooks.

The one-run trend continued for the Spirit in the top of the fifth as they came away with another solo score in the inning. Garrett Weir doubled off the wall in left field and he came around to score when the Capitales shortstop turned a ground ball from Weed into a two-base error.

Brooks broke the game open in the fifth with a two-run home run to straightaway center, his seventh of the season. Brooks' three RBIs on the day gave him 40 on the season, good for third overall in the CanAm League.

The Spirit have an off day on Monday, but they return to action on Tuesday in Nashua.
