Yakima Valley Pippins News Release
YAKIMA, Wash. - When it comes to playing the Pippins, opponents have been learning the hard way that it takes 27 outs to complete a game. Friday night, the Corvallis Knights only got 25 outs and fell to the Pippins, 4-3, on walk-off single from Corey Morris.
Yakima Valley (19-16) took a lead in the 3rd inning on a RBI triple from J.R. Davis. However, Corvallis (19-16) answered right back and tied the game in the 4th on an RBI groundout. Pippins starter Darrion Simons, who pitched well over six innings, helped bring home the go-ahead run in the 6th on an overthrow to 1st base and Corvallis added a run in the 7th on a double steal to go up, 3-1.
That appeared to be plenty of run support for Corvallis starter Slater Lee, who allowed just one run on five hits through his first eight innings of work. However, he came back out in the 9th and struggled. Jace Van De Brake dropped a bunt single to lead off and the Pippins loaded the bases soon after on walks to Mitch Skaggs and Reid Martinez.
An RBI groundout from Freddy Smith cut the deficit to 3-2 and chased Lee from the game. His replacement, Harrison McGhee, proceeded to balk in the tying run, before Morris delivered the walk-off single to complete Yakima Valley's fourth walk-off win this season.
With the victory, the Pippins snapped a three-game losing streak and avoided their first-ever four-game skid. They'll look to take the series Saturday night at 7:05, when they send right-hander Jens Jensen to the mound in the final game before the all-star break.
