Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Charleston, WV (August 30, 2009) - First baseman Kyle Morgan ripped a pair of singles and two doubles for the West Virginia Power at Appalachian Power Park on Sunday night as they used a pair of big innings early on to defeat the Hickory Crawdads 9-8.
Eric Fry gave Hickory their only lead of the contest on a solo homer in the top of the second inning. West Virginia plated a trio of runs in the next half inning to take the lead for good. Danny Bomback reached on Leury Garcia's throwing error which allowed Calvin Anderson to score and Adenson Chourio walked with the bases loaded to plate the go ahead run before Robbie Grossman capped the inning with an RBI single.
West Virginia pulled away with a four run third inning. Kyle Morgan belted a single into right field which moved Anderson to third base and Andres James's fielding error allowed Anderson to score. Josue Peley smacked an infield single to plate the next run and Starling Marte brought in the final two on a base hit. Morgan ripped a double to left center field in the sixth inning for hits fourth hit of the game to score Anderson again, and Morgan scored a few moments later on Bobby Spain's sacrifice fly.
The Crawdads made things interesting over the last three innings. Jared Bolden's two out single in the seventh brought in James and they scored six times in the top of the ninth inning. Bolden walked with the bases loaded to plate the first run and the next batter Vinny DiFazio was hit by a pitch to drive in the next one. Eric Fry then hit his second homer of the night. His Grand Slam off of Wilson Ortiz made it a one run contest. Ortiz was relieved in favor of Rafael De Los Santos who recorded the final out of the game with the tying run on first base.
Brett Lorin (2-1) was fantastic in six strong innings to earn the victory. He allowed just a run on six hits and struck out eight batters. De Los Santos recorded the final out of the contest to earn his first save of the season and Wilfredo Boscan (6-8) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs on six hits over two and two-thirds.
West Virginia improved to 62-67 overall, and 35-24 in the second half after the win, while the Crawdads fell to 61-70 overall and 28-34 in the second half after the loss. Morgan's four hit performance paced the Power and he scored a run for the seventh game in a row. Adenson Chourio turned in a two hit performance and he's hit safely in four straight games. Bobby Spain singled in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
West Virginia will finish the three game series with the Hickory Crawdads at Appalachian Power Park on Monday night. The Power will start right hander Hunter Strickland (3-2, 4.50) and the Crawdads will counter with right hander Joe Wieland (4-5, 5.52). The first pitch will be delivered at 7:05 PM.
