August 30, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - In the final meeting ever between the Lakewood BlueClaws and the Lake County Captains, the Captains make a late charge to separate themselves from the BlueClaws 8-2.
The teams split their 22 games this season 11 a piece with the BlueClaws loss today. The Captains (35-27) will be moving to the Midwest League next year and will no longer compete in the South Atlantic League.
The game was close throughout, as the BlueClaws (31-29) even had the bases loaded in a 4-2 ballgame in the seventh, but the Captains lengthened their lead with three runs in the inning to make it 7-2.
Lakewood got out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Travis d'Arnaud walked and was singled home by Brian Gump, but then the Captains got to BlueClaws starter Heitor Correa.
Correa (7-8) pitched five innings and did well to only allow three runs because he allowed a total of 14 baserunners through eight hits, five walks and a hit batter. Freddy Ballestas struggled in relief of Correa as he worked 1.2 innings, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks. Jacob Diekman pitched the final 1.1 innings scoreless for the BlueClaws.
The Captains got 5.1 strong innings out of lefty starter TJ McFarland (9-4), who picked up his ninth win of the season. He allowed just one run on three hits with six strikeouts.
In their last two games combined, the BlueClaws have allowed 18 runs on 30 hits.
The BlueClaws finished their six-game road trip with a 4-2 record and come home for their final regular season homestand of the season on Monday at 7:05 pm. The BlueClaws welcome the Hagerstown Suns to FirstEnergy Park, fresh off a three-game sweep if the Suns in Municipal Stadium in Maryland. The BlueClaws will send Justin De Fratus (5-6) to the mound and he will be opposed by Marcos Frias (8-4). This is the third straight time in the rotation these two will meet.
