Hickory Crawdads News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - The Hickory Crawdads scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning, but came up just short, 9-8, against the West Virginia Power before 1,481 fans at Appalachian Power Park on Sunday evening. OF Eric Fry hit two home runs, including a ninth-inning grand slam, and drove in five RBIs in his first game back from the disabled list for the Crawdads.
The Crawdads (28-34, 61-70) struck first in the top of the second, when Fry hit a solo home run off RHP Brett Lorin (2-1) to put Hickory ahead, 1-0. West Virginia came right back with three runs on two hits, one miscue and three walks against RHP Wilfredo Boscan (6-8) in the bottom of the second, putting the Power ahead 3-1 through two.
West Virginia (35-24, 62-67) added four more runs in the bottom of the third inning, taking a 7-1 lead. The Power strung together four hits, a walk and a hit batter in the rally, which was capped by a two-run single by CF Starling Marte, the last batter Boscan faced before RHP Mark Hamburger took over on the mound.
Hamburger dealt the next 2.1 innings in scoreless fashion, before giving way to RHP Jorge Quintero to start the bottom of the sixth. The Power tacked on two more tallies against Quintero in the sixth, with an RBI double by 1B Kyle Morgan and an RBI sacrifice fly by 3B Bobby Spain, making it 9-1.
The Crawdads began to chip away with a run against RHP Diego Moreno in the top of the seventh. 2B Andres James led of the inning with his second double, and third hit, of the game, before coming in and scoring on CF Jared Bolden's two-out RBI single to left field, cutting the Power lead to 9-2.
Hickory refused to go quietly, striking for six runs in the top of the ninth inning to pull within a run of tying the game. De Los Santos and James started the inning with back-to-back singles, before SS Leury Garcia was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With one out, Bolden drew an RBI walk, forcing in De Los Santos from third. DH Vinny DiFazio then was hit by a pitch with the bases still loaded, earning an RBI and bringing in James, making it 9-4 and keeping the bases full. After a strikeout put two outs on the board, Fry went yard again, crushing a pitch over the right field wall for his first grand slam of the season, making it 9-8. RHP Rafael De Los Santos then took over on the mound and gave up a single to 1B Matt West, but then retired De Los Santos for the game's final out, closing the win for West Virginia. Boscan was tagged with the loss for the Crawdads, while Lorin registered the win Rafael De Los Santos earned the save for the Power.
