Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

GREENSBORO, NC - Jon Gilmore's ninth inning home run was not enough, as Greensboro handed Kannapolis a tough 5-4, 10-inning loss on Sunday night at NewBridge Bank Park.

Ryan Keedy crushed a big fly off of Enrique Lechuga (0-1) on a 3-2 pitch to start the 10th and send the Grasshoppers home a winner.

The long ball countered the earlier heroics of Gilmore, who was down to his final strike before he clubbed a two-out, two-run home run off the scoreboard in right-center against Jared Yecker. Brandon Short had reached on a two-strike pitch of his own one batter prior to give Gilmore a chance to tie the game.

The Grasshoppers had taken a lead against Stephen Sauer, who was strong in his start, but remained winless since mid-July. Sauer worked seven innings, giving up three runs, two earned, while striking out four without a walk.

Kannapolis had earlier opportunities to equalize, loading the bases in the seventh without scoring. The Intimidators also had runners at first and third with no outs in the eighth, but failed to plate what would have been the tying run.

Ben Lasater's eighth inning home run against Dan Remenowsky gave Greensboro a two-run lead headed to the ninth. Remenowsky settled after giving up the leadoff blast, striking out four and allowing one more hit in two innings of work.

Kannapolis' magic number for clinching the second half championship remains at four, as West Virginia held on for a 9-8 win over Hickory on Sunday afternoon.
