Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Salem, VA -Brent Morel hit a decisive home run and racked up three RBI to help Winston-Salem defeat Salem 7-4 on Wednesday night at Lewis-Gale Field. The Dash third baseman hit a two-run shot in the top of the sixth inning to put Winston-Salem in front for good as they evened this three-game series at a game apiece.

The Dash seemed poised to break the game open in the first inning, but only managed one run against Salem starter Bryan Pryce. Second baseman Dale Mollenhauer singled and shortstop Greg Paiml walked to lead off the inning. First baseman Jimmy Gallagher followed with an RBI double that scored Mollenhauer and left runners on second and third with no outs. Pryce worked out of the jam as he struck out the next three batters to end the inning.

Salem knotted the score in the bottom of the first when Che-Hsuan Lin led off with a double against Anthony Carter and scored on Daniel Nava's RBI single. Both pitchers settled down after a rough first inning as Price retired ten in a row at one point and did not allow another hit until Morel's home run in the sixth inning put the Dash in front 3-2.

Price (1-5), who suffered his second consecutive loss against Winston-Salem, was pulled after Morel's round-tripper in favor of Kyle Fernandes. The new hurler was greeted rudely by designated hitter Seth Loman, who launched a solo home run off the southpaw to give Winston-Salem a 4-2 lead.

The Dash continued the hit parade against Fernandes in the top of the eighth inning as Morel, Salvador Sanchez and Tyler Kuhn each collected RBI doubles to extend Winston-Salem's advantage to 7-2. Kuhn, who finished 2-for-4, extended his season-high hitting streak to 11 games and raised his batting average to .403.

The run support was more than enough for Carter (8-4), who allowed two runs on five hits in 6.1 innings of work to earn the win. His eight wins are tied for the Carolina League lead with three other pitchers, including former Dash starting pitcher Charlie Shirek, who was promoted to Double-A Birmingham on June 9.

Salem would collect a two-run single in the eighth inning from Lin before Winston-Salem brought Miguel Socolovich out of the bullpen. The Dash closer set down four in a row, including two strikeouts, to collect his sixth save of the season.

The Dash and Red Sox will conclude this three-game series at Lewis-Gale Field on Thursday night. Winston-Salem will send LHP Justin Edwards (2-1, 7.85) to the mound, while Salem is expected to start RHP Stephen Fife (0-0, ---), who will be making his Carolina League debut. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
