More Accolades; Tornadoes Take June Awards

DURHAM, NC -- The official statistician of the Can-Am League, PA-Sportsticker, has selected Worcester Tornadoes OF Scott Grimes and LHP Tom Cochran as the B45 Batter and Pitcher of the Month for June.

Grimes had a tremendous month of June for the Tornadoes. The resident of Kennett Square, PA batted .407 with seven home runs, 22 RBI, 23 runs scored and 44 hits. He also hit three doubles and two triples, slugged .667 and had a .445 on-base percentage. Grimes is currently hitting .403 with eight home runs, 24 RBI, 33 runs scored and 54 hits. He is leading the league in batting average, home runs, triples (3), on-base percentage (.484) and slugging percentage (.664). Grimes also recorded a 16-game hitting streak from June 6-24, the second-longest hitting streak in the league this year and tied for the third-longest hitting streak in Tornadoes franchise history. He has reached base in every single game in which he has played this season (35), both the longest active on-base streak in the league and the longest on-base streak in the league in 2008.

The 24-year-old Grimes is currently in his fourth season of professional baseball, all in the independent leagues. In 2005, he played with the league's road team, the Grays while in 2006 & 2007 he was with the Sussex Skyhawks.

Cochran had a stellar June going a perfect 5-0 with a 1.42 ERA in five starts for Worcester. In 38 innings pitched, he gave up six earned runs, nine walks and 29 hits while fanning 28 batters. Currently, Cochran has a 6-0 record with a 1.72 ERA in 47 innings pitched. He is tied for the league lead in wins and shutouts and third in earned run average. Cochran has recorded a win or a save in every trip to the mound with Worcester in '08, and has pitched 6 innings or more while allowing 2 earned runs or less in every start. Cochran pitched just the third nine-inning complete game shutout in Tornadoes history on 6/27, blanking Quebec on just 5 hits in a 10-0 Worcester victory.

The 25-year-old was an 18th round selection of the Boston Red Sox in 2003. He pitched two seasons in the Red Sox farm system before playing in the Frontier League from 2005-2007 with Ohio Valley and Washington.
