Skyhawks cruise to victory

AUGUSTA, N.J. - *Sussex starter Craig Snipp kept Ottawa scoreless through eight innings and the Skyhawks pounded out 17 hits en route to a 9-1 victory over the Rapiz on Tuesday night at Skylands Park.

Snipp (3-2) scattered seven hits and gave up just one run in his 8.1 innings of work, before giving way to reliever Michael Rogers, who recorded the final two outs for Sussex. Adam Hawes (2-4) was tagged with the loss for Ottawa (10-26) after giving up seven runs on 11 hits in 4.2 innings.

Shortstop Kevin Rios, catcher Yohanny Valera and third baseman Jay Yaconetti each had three hits in the winning effort for the Skyhawks.

Sussex (20-17) broke open the game in the bottom of the second inning. Already up 1-0, the Skyhawks loaded the bases with two outs when Jorge Moreno hit a fly ball that fell into shallow left center scoring three runs. Designated hitter Walter Young followed with an RBI-single to right to give Sussex a 5-0 lead.

Yaconetti extended the Sussex lead in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run blast over the left field wall to give the Skyhawks a 7-0 advantage.

Sussex added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The two teams return to action at Skylands Park on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game.

The Skyhawks will host two fireworks' nights this week. Both Thursday and Friday nights' games begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature fire works at the conclusion of the games.
