Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Colin Moran lashed a one-out, eighth-inning single to left, scoring Danry Vasquez from second base with the winning run as Corpus Christi edged San Antonio 2-1 Sunday at Whataburger Field before 5,973.
At 83-49 overall, the Hooks stand 34 games over .500 for the first time in team history. They are 35-27 in Texas League second-half play.
The 83 victories tie a club best.
San Antonio is 56-76 and 25-37.
Eury De La Rosa (1-1), on in relief of starter Bryce Morrow, walked lead-off man Vasquez on a 3-2 pitch. Teoscar Hernandez bunted Vasquez into scoring position, setting the stage for Moran.
Gonzalo Sanudo (1-0), added to the Corpus Christi roster by the Astros Sunday, tossed two perfect frames in relief of starter Michael Feliz. Sanudo had been on loan to Diablos Rojos of the Mexican League.
Feliz, Sanudo, and Jandel Gustave (18th save) limited the Missions to three hits.
Two singles and a fielder's choice RBI produced the first run as Corpus Christi took a 1-0 second-inning lead. Jon Kemmer and Jio Mier lined one-out singles into right and center field, respectively. Kemmer stole second and advanced to third on Mier's single, crossing when Conrad Gregor bounced into a fielder's choice.
Feliz, who faced the minimum through three, suffered from a one-out walk to Auston Bousfield in the fourth when Alberth Martinez delivered a double into the left-field corner, drawing the Missions even.
Feliz ultimately covered six innings in 86 pitches, including 49 strikes. Houston's No. 5 prospect permitted two hits, two walks, and struck out six.
Morrow, inked as a non-drafted free agent by the Padres two years ago, allowed five hits in the first three innings before facing one over the minimum during the next four frames. That baserunner was Moran, who reached on an error by third baseman Gabriel Quintana to begin the home sixth.
Kemmer and Reed have nine-game hitting streaks.
Monday means $1 Hot Dogs & Soda from Mrs Baird's as the Hooks and Missions complete their three-game series. The Hooks send Chris Devenski (7-4) against Dennis O'Grady (3-5) at 7:05.
