Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SYDNEY - It was a festive atmosphere at Centre 200 for CBU Night but the Halifax Mooseheads were undaunted in a 5-2 win at Centre 200.
It was the largest crowd of the season at Centre 200 and the Eagles did get off to the desired start. Mathieu Cataford was sent off in the opening minutes and Sean Larcohelle ripped a shot off the shoulder of Brady James to make it 1-0. The Eagles had the opportunity to take a firm hold on the game when Zachary L'Heureux was given a match penalty in addition to a five minute major.
Halifax was able to kill off the major though, and just past the halfway mark of the opening frame took advantage of a favourable bounce as the puck went up and over Rémi Delafontaine. The goal was credited to Halifax forward Bobby Orr, who hit the scoresheet less than three minutes later again when he converted a cross-crease pass from Jordan Dumais.
It looked like the period would finish 2-1, but Eagles forward Ivan Ivan darted up the left wing and put a backhand shot by Brady James. Not to be outdone, Halifax countered with a late strike of their own. Defenseman Stephen Davis took a shot that bounced off the end boards to Markus Vidicek, who flipped it in front to Zachary Beauregard who finished the play to give Halifax the lead back with three seconds to play in the period.
Despite the fast start and an eventful opening 20 minutes, neither team hit the back of the net in the middle stanza. Before the seven minute mark, FJ Buteau was whistled for hooking, and Halifax's David Lafrance was awarded a penalty shot. Lafrance put the puck between the legs of Delafontaine and gave Halifax the first two goal lead for either team.
The Eagles had an opportunity to get back into the game when Dylan MacKinnon was given a double minor for high sticking. But just over a minute into the power play, the man advantage was nullified by Dawson Stairs taking his own minor penalty. The Eagles couldn't score 4 on 4 or on the remainder of the power play when Stairs's minor ended.
There was one more goal left in the game, as Elliot Desnoyers found the back of the net by jabbing it through the legs of Delafontaine. The Eagles thought they had pulled one back in the final two minutes when an Ivan Ivan shot from the left circle by James, but the goal was called back due to an offside and the final score was 5-2.
James stopped 28 of 31 in the win, while Delafontaine allowed five goals on 24 shots.
The Eagles are back in action tomorrow night against the Charlottetown Islanders. Puck drop is Saturday night at 7 PM.
