Moose Go OT to Topple Belleville
March 1, 2019 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose (27-25-3-2) outlasted the Belleville Senators (29-23-3-4) for a 3-2 overtime victory on Friday evening. The Moose got the scoring started 7:20 into the game with a power play goal from Jansen Harkins as the forward came down from the blueline and picked a corner on Marcus Hogberg. The game stayed at a one-goal differential until Seth Griffith fired one from the faceoff circle to give the Moose a 2-0 lead with two minutes left in the period. Off the ensuing draw, Belleville drew a penalty and Nick Paul cashed in on the power play just 33 seconds after Griffith's goal. The Moose outshot the Senators 12-9 in the first and took a 2-1 lead into the dressing room.
Belleville came out firing in the second period, fueled by three power plays in the frame. Mikhail Berdin faced 17 shots in the period and allowed just one tally. After Berdin was penalized on a rare delay of game call for covering the puck, Darren Archibald finished off a Vitaly Abramov drive to the net to tie the game 2-2 with 3:32 left in the period. The power play goal was the only tally of the frame as the clubs went to the third tied 2-2.
The final 20 minutes solved nothing as Berdin and Hogberg each made eight saves to keep the game tied through regulation. Berdin starred in overtime, shutting down Nick Paul on a partial breakaway, and making a flashy glove save to turn away Paul's follow-up chance on a penalty shot. The Moose netminder's saves provided Griffith the opportunity to work his magic. The veteran forward slipped his way to the front of the Belleville net and slid the puck to the back of the goal to give Manitoba the 3-2 win in extra time.
