Moose Dropped By Bulldogs, 7-1

The Manitoba Moose dropped a 7-1 decision to the North Division-leading Hamilton Bulldogs in front of 7769 fans at MTS Centre on Wednesday night. Lawrence Nycholat scored the lone Manitoba goal while Cory Schneider stopped 15 of 20 shots in two periods of work, Daren Machesney stopped 5 of 7 shots in his third-period relief. Despite the loss, the Moose maintain their fourth place position in the North Division.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring a mere 56 seconds into the first period as Brock Trotter skated through the Moose zone and snapped the puck past a sprawling Cory Schneider, giving the Hamilton club the early 1-0 lead.

The Moose quickly answered back as rookie forward Jordan Schroeder fired a shot into the pads of Hamilton netminder Cedrick Desjardins, the rebound came right to the stick of Lawrence Nycholat who knocked in his fifth goal of the season at 3:49 in the first period, notching the teams at one goal apiece.

Not to be outdone, Bulldogs' forward Brock Trotter streaked alone into the Moose zone deking his way to the net and sliding his second goal of the game past Cory Schneider at 7:22 in the first giving his team the one goal advantage once again.

Shortly after the Bulldogs outlasted the first Moose powerplay of the game Bulldogs' forwards Ryan Russell and Aaron Palushaj sped into the Moose zone on a two-on-one with Palushaj batting in his seventh of the season at 14:03 in the first period giving Hamilton the 3-1 advantage.

Dusty Collins was handed a slashing penalty at 14:22 in the first period sending Manitoba's penalty killers to the ice for the first time in the game. Hamilton managed only a single shot on the powerplay and the visitors were unable to crack the Moose defence.

A second slashing penalty was given to Marco Rosa at 18:13, sending the home-team penalty killers back to work to close out the first period. The visitors' powerplay continued for 13 seconds into the second period, but throughout the Moose penalty killers were able to prevent a single shot.

The Moose were handed a four-minute powerplay at 10:35 in the second period as Hamilton defenceman Shawn Belle was caught high-sticking and was sent to the box. The Manitoba powerplay was cut shot as the Moose were caught with too many men on the ice at 12:41. Three seconds into the 4-on-4, Hamilton defenceman Yannick Weber slapped a shot from the point through Cory Schneider, putting the Bulldogs ahead 4-1.

The visitors continued at 17:07 in the second period as Ryan Russell skated into the Moose zone, firing a backhand which ricocheted off the Moose defender's stick and over Cory Schneider 's shoulder, putting Hamilton ahead by a score of 5-1.

The Moose decided for a change in net to start the third period, opting for Daren Machesney, hoping to turn the tide of the game; Cory Schneider ended his two periods of play stopping 15 of 20 shots.

Alex Henry was charged with a 4:00 roughing penalty at 2:42 in the third period, sending the Moose powerplay to work. Despite the extended man-advantage, Manitoba was shutout by the Hamilton penalty killers.

With Lawrence Nycholat sitting in the penalty box for high-sticking the Bulldogs took to the powerplay. Ryan White fed the puck through the crease to Dany Masse who shot the puck past Daren Machesney to set Hamilton ahead 6-1.

The Hamilton scoring continued with Yan Stastny serving two minutes for slashing at 15:22 in the third. Aaron Palushaj worked the puck free behind the net and fed it to Andrew Conboy who was waiting on the doorstop and smacked the puck home to set the final score at 7-1.

LOOKING AHEAD The Moose will head to Abbotsford to close-out their season-set with the Heat next week.
