Moose Double Up Stars
February 12, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release
WINNIPEG, MAN --- The Manitoba Moose stayed perfect at home against the Iowa Stars with a 6-3 win Tuesday night at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg. The Stars are now 0-5-0-0 all-time in Manitoba and dropped to 23-26-2-2 overall this season. James Neal, Nolan Baumgartner and Marty Sertich scored for the Stars. The Stars and Moose play again tomorrow night at 7:30 at the MTS Centre.
The Moose scored on their very first shot a minute-31 into the contest when Shaun Heshka threw the puck to the net from the far right point and had it deflect past Stars netminder Tobias Stephan for a 1-0 lead. The Moose's second goal also came off a shot from way out, this time off the stick of Jimmy Sharrow and again from the right point making the score 2-0. Neal scored 12 seconds later to put the Stars on the board. It was Neal's 6th of the season and the first in his three games back since missing 15 games with a knee injury.
Former Moose captain and All-Star Baumgartner tied the game for the Stars with a power play goal at 7:29 of the second. But, the Moose would reclaim the lead 2:28 later. This time it was off a rebound into an empty net by Brad Moran.
The Moose held a 3-2 edge going into the third stanza only to have the Stars rally again. Sertich scored for the third time in the last four games when he sent the puck to the goal mouth from the goal line and had it deflect off the back-side leg of Moose goalie Drew McIntyre.
A key moment in the third period occurred when the Stars' Konstantin Pushkarev was given a major penalty for butt-ending. A game misconduct accompanied the penalty sending Pushkarev to the locker room. The major call took away the remaining 20 seconds of a Stars power play and eventually led to the Moose taking command of the game with three goals. One was scored while the teams were four on four, one was tallied on the three minute major power play and the third found the back of the net just after the Stars returned to full strength.
For the game, the Stars outshot the Moose 28-27 while both teams made good twice on the power play. The Stars were two-for-seven and the Moose went two-for-six.
Brad Moran finished with two goals and an assist to lead the Moose. Greg Classen added three assists.
